Tom Cruise & Ryan Coogler: Power Duo Project in the Works?

1 day ago 7

Tom Cruise continues his impressive run in Hollywood with multiple high-profile projects, despite moving into his 60s. The actor delivered one of the biggest movies of all time with 2022’s Top Gun: Maverick, which grossed \$1.5 billion globally and has returned to theaters. He also completed his long-standing Mission: Impossible franchise with Mission: Impossible — Dead Reckoning Part 1 in 2023 and Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning in 2025.

Cruise’s upcoming projects include a new Warner Bros. film titled Digger, where he will play a powerful businessman who believes he is humanity’s savior. The actor will also continue his role as Captain Pete “Maverick” Mitchell in the untitled Top Gun 3, currently in early development without a release window.

According to insider Jeff Sneider via The InSneider report, Paramount is considering Cruise for the leading role in a new Ryan Coogler-produced movie titled Doppelgänger. The film would be directed by Aneesh Chaganty, known for Searching, based on a script he co-wrote with Dan Frey.

The project is described as an original spy thriller with franchise potential. Cruise would play Veer, a CIA agent who discovers that Russian intelligence has found a Brazilian man who is his exact double, with plans to replace him as a covert mole in the agency.

Paramount Chairman and CEO David Ellison has reportedly made the film a priority, investing millions into development. Writers are actively rewriting the script to suit Cruise, though he has not formally committed to the role.

This would mark Cruise’s first collaboration with Coogler, who recently won his first Oscar for Best Original Screenplay for 2025’s Sinners. Coogler is known for Marvel Studios’ Black Panther franchise, with Black Panther 3 already in early development, and the successful Creed franchise that continues Sylvester Stallone’s Rocky movies.

Should Cruise accept the role, it would add another project to his already packed schedule, raising questions about development timelines and eventual release dates. The pairing of Cruise and Coogler would create an instant power combination in Hollywood.
