1 month ago 5

This week’s Top Comics to Buy for October 16 comes on the eve of New York Comic Con, one of the two major North American gatherings for the industry. There’s going to be a lot of news coming out of that show, but if you just want to stay home and actually read comics, you’ve got plenty of great options this week to do just that. Check out my five recommendations below along with The Beat’s usual set of lists…enjoy!

Top Comics to Buy for October 16, 2024

Batman and Robin: Year One #1
Co-Plotters: Mark Waid & Chris Samnee
Writer: Mark Waid
Artist: Chris Samnee
Colorist: Matheus Lopes
Letterers: Clayton Cowles w/Chris Samnee
Publisher: DC Comics
While Bruce Wayne adjusts to the realities of adopting orphan Dick Grayson, a mysterious new crime boss called the General has come to Gotham to claim the city by disrupting and destroying its other mobs. But what is his connection to Two-Face? Batman and his new sidekick, Robin, are out for answers, but it’ll take everything they have to navigate both sides of their relationship as father and son and dynamic duo, with Dick Grayson’s present and future hanging in the balance!
Why It’s Cool:
In brief, it’s a new Waid & Samnee comic, and their collaboration is not to be missed, creating as it has some of the best superhero comics of the past 20 years, including an all-time great Daredevil run, among others. This was an easy choice for the Top Comics to Buy for October 16.

Destro #5
Writer: Dan Watters
Artist: Andrei Bressan
Colorist: Adriano Lucas
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics/Skybound
Destro. Cobra Commander. The Crimson Twins. The most dangerous powers in the Energon Universe are at war… but only one can win. The road to G.I. Joe #1 ends here!
Why It’s Cool:
This finale issue marks the end of the long, fun road to the Energon Universe’s new G.I. Joe #1 (which is still available for pre-order until this coming Monday!). These interweaving books have done such a great job of creating a new status quo for these old characters. It’s been a great ride.

$3.99

Ultimate Spider-Man #10
Writer: Jonathan Hickman
Artist: David Messina
Colorist: Matthew Wilson
Letterer: Cory Petit
Publisher: Marvel Comics
Fan-favorite duo Ben Parker and J. Jonah Jameson take center stage in this investigative mystery issue! But in this world of shadows and secrets, every unturned rock leads to danger… And they’ll soon have to decide which is the greater challenge – uncovering secrets or keeping them!
Why It’s Cool:
It’s been so so nice to have a genuinenly excellent new Spider-Man comic. And this is certainly that, sort of re-imagining some core tenants of Spider-Man in new ways. I think it’s safe to say that 10 issues in, this is the best new Spider-Man comic in a good long while.
Price:
$4.99

Ultramega #6
Writer/Artist: James Harren
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Letterer: Rus Wooton
Publisher: Image Comics
From beyond the cosmos, a terrifying new enemy emerges! Has any Ultramega faced a threat like this?! But first, Noah will train his massive fists on a city gone kaiju krazy!
Why It’s Cool:
This is a story of space kaiju and their home planet and what they’re doing to earth, and if that all weren’t enough, it looks unlike any other new comic today. It’s a must-read, and settle in, because I have a feeling that every issue is going to be ending up in this space.

$7.99

Where Monsters Lie – Cull-De-Sac #1
Writer: Kyle Starks
Artist: Piotr Kowalski
Colorist: Vladimir Popov
Letterer: Joshua Reed
Publisher: Dark Horse Comics
The hit meta-horror comedy by Eisner-nominated writer Kyle Starks returns just in time for Halloween! Come join us, friends, for it’s time to visit another gated community for slashers and meet a new cast of horrible monsters as we return to the world of Where Monsters Lie. Connor Hayes, final girl turned apex monster hunter, has been brought to Site B and expected to be a good little killer, but will he cooperate? And what sort of bone-tingling secrets inhabit this new horror hamlet?
Why It’s Cool:
I love a good humorous deconstruction of genre comics, and this book — now on its second volume — is definitely that. Get ready, all the jokes and the horror tropes (and the jokes about horror tropes) are back for this second Where Monsters Lie mini.

$3.99
