Trailer Watch: The Star Wars ‘Skeleton Crew’ Trailer Has Arrived

2 weeks ago 8

Disney Lucasfilm’s trailer for Star Wars: Skeleton Crew, their latest Disney + offering in the Star Wars universe, had dropped not too long ago on Nov 1, 2024. I had to watch it a couple of times just to get my thoughts together on this one. Honestly, I’m not sure what to make of it. Part of me wants to be optimistic about it, but given Lucasfilm’s track record as of late, I’m feeling pretty justified in my hesitancy.

That being said, is a story about some lost children stumbling/seeking out treasure ala The Goonies really out of place in the Star Wars universe? I think it can work if done well, but that might be asking a lot. I have fond memories as a kid watching the two Ewok movies, heck even the Droids cartoons. Sure, looking back on them now, they are a bit rough, but for child me, they were fun. This is surely an attempt to capture the hearts of the children, and perhaps those young at heart. I don’t blame them.

This does reek of desperation, but to be fair, they did make the foul soup that is the current state of Star Wars themselves. I will say this though, that faux-80s music that plays through out the trailer, sung in what I think is Huttese, came off a bit cringey to me. Your taste may vary, of course. I feel like they should have just kept the track with out lyrics as it just calls back some bad Jedi Rock flashbacks. Heck, they could have come up with their own 80’s style song sung in English!

Over all, I don’t have any issues on the visuals. They look pretty good and it’s refreshing to see a lot of alien life. One of the protagonists is definitely a call back to ill-fated blue elephant guy Max Rebo, from Return of the Jedi. There really wasn’t much to chew on as far as the motives of the kids, other than the general plot of the show. I mean, there was some imagery about wanting more than galactic suburbia, childhood rebellion, and quirky physicality. Maybe I’m just dead inside… I mean, even the last line of the trailer may as well have said “Goonies never say die.”

Anyways, Jude Law will be playing one of the adult minders of this rag tag crew of minors. He’s an excellent actor, and he definitely shines when the writing is just as good. I’m not sure if it will be one of those scenarios where even herculean acting can save a bad show. But again, we shall see. It is promising to see Christopher Ford and Jon Watts as the showrunners. Their Spider Man movies were pretty fun.

The Star Wars fan in me hopes to be pleasantly surprised like I was with Andor, but the cynic in me is definitely expecting more of the same confusing disappointment that we’ve been getting. Time will tell.

The 8 episode Star Wars: Skeleton Crew is set to premier on December 3, 2024 and I’ll be reviewing it and giving my thoughts on it.
