Walt Disney Compnay Facing Class Action Suit over Massive Data Breach

The Walt Disney Company is fighting a major class-action lawsuit following a massive data breach in July, where over 1.1 terabytes of customer data were stolen by hackers. Filed in Los Angeles Superior Court on October 3, the lawsuit was brought by Scott Margel, representing thousands of current and former Disney customers. Plaintiffs accuse Disney of failing to protect their “highly sensitive personal information.”

The breach was allegedly carried out by the Russian hacktivist group “Nullbulge,” which gained access to Disney’s internal Slack communications. This breach exposed customer and employee information, including passport numbers from Disney Cruise Line crew members. In addition, details of Disney’s revenue from streaming services like Disney+, ESPN+, and Hulu were compromised.

While Disney has acknowledged the breach, many affected customers claim they were not informed of its full extent. Internal communications, ad campaigns, and login information were reportedly among the leaked data, with much of it linked to the Salesforce-owned Slack platform used by Disney.

This hacking incident comes at a challenging time for Disney, which is already dealing with financial struggles. Recent layoffs have impacted hundreds of corporate employees, and the company is undergoing significant restructuring. The financial strain is evident as Disney’s theme parks are facing revenue shortfalls, and the company’s stock was downgraded due to underperformance in its parks and continued challenges with its streaming services.

As Disney navigates these difficulties, the lawsuit presents a further test for the company, adding legal pressure to an already strained business. With mounting concerns over customer data security and growing public scrutiny, this case could have lasting implications for the entertainment giant.
