2 weeks ago 8

THOUGHT BUBBLE MONTH 2025! Every year at Broken Frontier we select two or three comics of the festival from the debuting titles that you need to make an absolute beeline for. This year is no exception so as we wrap up our Thought Bubble Month coverage here’s a handful of titles to make sure you buy in Harrogate…

Book of the Festival: On Starlit Shores by Bex Glendining

“What immediately strikes the reader about On Starlit Shores is the way in which it repositions the magical and the bizarre in a very everyday and, ironically, down-to-earth scenario. Slice-of-life storytelling blended with fantasy elements.”

Long-Form Comic of the Festival: Mother by Abs Bailey

“There’s a liquid, oozing quality to Bailey’s page layouts that add extra layers to the thematic feel of the book, and her use of lettering to emphasise these aspects is also sublime in its delivery. Short-Form Comic of the Festival: 5 More Minutes by Hannah Berry

“It’s almost beautiful in its meditations on our insignificance, solitude and ultimate helplessness. In this quiet introspection 5 More Minutes is a deeply unsettling and indeed terrifying comic. A human drama that will leave you more disconcerted than any overt horror comic could ever hope to do. Welcome back, Hannah Berry.”
