Russell T Davies now says the canceled 2026 Christmas episode of Doctor Who was more than a public-relations placeholder. He now claims that it had a story, a BBC-approved pitch, and a planned role for Billie Piper after the gay Doctor, Ncuti Gatwa’s exit. That is a sharp change from Davies’ June statement, when he said the special had been “cooked up” to secure the show’s future and insisted there was no script, no writing, and no actor approached to play the next Doctor. The BBC canceled the special that month as it opened Doctor Who to a competitive tender process for its next production partner. The BBC confirmed the decision was made with Davies and Bad Wolf after the end of Disney’s involvement.
