Wonder Woman Revealed To Be DC's New Green Lantern

James Gunn has his Superman (David Corenswet) and Supergirl (Milly Alcock), but there is still no announcement on who'll portray The Flash, Batman or Wonder Woman in the DCU, though there is speculation on who might suit up as the next Princess Diana of Themyscira for DC Studios.

Meanwhile, DC Comics isn't exactly waiting around to make things interesting for one of their top characters, and not simply with the controversial Absolute Wonder Woman storyline. They've concocted an idea that makes Diana Prince so overpowered — considering her power level as-is — that anyone who stands in her way won't be standing for long.

In Wonder Woman #34, written by Tom King with art by Daniel Sampere and Bruno Redondo, the Justice League's femme fatale gains a cosmic power usually reserved for a select few, and it officially makes her a member of the Lantern Corps.

Wonder Woman Acquires a Green Lantern Ring

Per the official synopsis: "THE BATTLE IS ONLY BEGINNING! Diana and Steve's bittersweet reunion is cut short by the Matriarch and her plans to destroy Wonder Woman. Can Trinity save her parents and the world? You won't want to miss the riveting conclusion of The Wonder War Act One!"

Riveting is an understatement, because it's not simply that Wonder Woman has acquired a Green Lantern ring, but rather how she got her hands on one, and who it belonged to. In her quest to defeat Matriarch, it is discovered the ring once belonged to John Stewart, whom Matriach murdered to steal it.

"It’s the conclusion of the first act of The Wonder War, and let me just say, I did not expect how this would go," said GeekDad in a review of Wonder Woman #34. "Obviously, this run has had its detractors (which has led to some god-awful behavior towards both King and his frequent collaborator Stephanie Williams) but, at its core, this is one of the darkest alternate futures we’ve ever seen in the DCU."

Wonder Woman Wants to Avenge John Stewart's Death

It's as dark an arc as anyone has ever seen involving Princess Diana — save for the aforementioned Absolute Batman series — Matriarch murdering one of Earth's Green Lanterns and forcing the ring to assimilate to her will, and then murdering anyone who'd attempt to take it from her.

"Wonder Woman has found Steve Trevor again and the family is getting ready to face the Matriach, but this issue explains just how powerful she is," GeekDad continued. "After killing John Stewart as part of her mass killing of heroes, she stole his ring – and essentially broke its will, bonding it to her through sheer determination and pain tolerance. She’s even able to command it to kill a Guardian when he comes to take it back. And that’s the power she’s bearing when Diana comes calling for her with the God-Killer Sword, and the final battle begins."

There is no question Diana is worthy of the ring, having now stolen it from Matriarch, but given the powers being wielded by the latter, will it all be enough to take the villainess down once and for all??
