Your Guide To Marvel’s Horror-Centric Midnight Universe

3 weeks ago 34

Marvel Comics has a tradition of horror going back to the 1970s. Characters like Man-Thing, Werewolf by Night, Blade, Ghost Rider, and Moon Knight were created in that era and have been joined by the likes of Marvel Zombies, Elsa Bloodstone, and others in subsequent decades. In 2026, the publisher launches a line of horror comics, known as the Midnight Universe.

Learn how you can step into the shadows of this comic book line with this guide. It’ll provide all the details you need to know so you can enjoy the horror.

Updating…

Marvel will continue to roll out details about the Midnight Universe over the coming months. This guide will be updated as more details are made available.

What is the Midnight Universe?

The Midnight Universe is the intersection of superheroes and horror, as told through alternate universe stories. Readers will see familiar characters like the X-Men, Fantastic Four, and Spider-Man in unfamiliar, yet terrifying new ways through this line of titles. Expect shocking twists and unpredictable changes in these character-driven horror comics.

Here’s how Marvel Comics Editor in Chief C.B. Cebulski explains it:

“With the new Midnight line, we’ve given some of our most outstanding creators the opportunity to delve into the darkest corners of their imaginations and birth some of the creepiest, most terrifying takes on the Marvel Universe you’ve ever seen.”

While these titles seem siloed, Marvel has hinted that they will be “interconnected by rich lore-building”. How this will be presented is yet to be seen. However, it has been curated by writer Jonathan Hickman, who’s known for his worldbuilding and connecting various parts of Marvel lore together.

In the Midnight Universe, the X-Men are no longer fighting for mutant rights. Instead, they’re at war with the vampire faction of New York City.

Writer Jonathan Hickman returns to the X-Men after reinventing them as part of the Kraoka Era. This time, he’s tackling Marvel’s mutants through a horror lens by using his signature world-building to combine the genre with new and old concepts.

Midnight X-Men #1 will be published on 5th August.

Will there be more Midnight Universe comics?

Marvel hasn’t indicated that there will be future Midnight Universe comics. However, it’s likely, based on how the publisher operates, that there will be more later down the line. If the Midnight Universe is successful, like the Ultimate Universe, other horror interpretations of characters are likely to follow.

This guide will be updated if Marvel announce more comics.

Will we see other Marvel characters?

We will have to wait and see if other characters beyond those announced will appear in the Midnight Universe. However, we may see other Marvel characters in existing (and possible future) titles. These could be other heroes, villains, or Marvel’s many horror characters.

Introducing Cloaked Covers

Marvel Comics is taking an interesting route when it comes to covers of Midnight Universe comics. The publisher is introducing the concept of “Cloaked Covers”, comics where the cover is partially obscured and only fully revealed to readers who pick up the comics. Only the debut covers will be revealed to readers beforehand.

While the Cloaked Cover idea is a gimmick in and of itself, it seems to have some utility beyond collectability. The concept looks to work in tandem with reader anticipation by not revealing too much beforehand. Hopefully, this means there are plenty of surprises in store that will make readers seek out these comics.

Interestingly, there haven’t been any variant covers announced for the Midnight Universe. This is a surprise for Marvel Comics, which has relied (too) heavily on them for the past two decades. However, Marvel may announce these at a later date.
