The X-Men's most infamous era is about to be turned on its head in honor of its thirtieth anniversary.
Per a press release from Marvel Comics, the darkest era in X-Men history is about to be revisited by writer Jeph Loeb and artist Simone di Mio in the pages of X-Men of Apocalypse. This new series will serve as a direct follow-up to X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha #1, and will run for six pulse-pounding issues that will mirror the events of the original Age of Apocalypse in honor of the event's thirtieth anniversary. The series will also mark the return of Loeb's most underrated comic book creation - Nate Grey, better known as X-Man.

First seen in the pages of X-Man #1 by Loeb and Steve Skroce, the version of Nate Grey known as X-Man was genetically engineered by the Mister Sinister of the Age of Apocalypse using the DNA of Cyclops and Jean Grey. Created to be the ultimate telepath who might afford Sinister a chance at eventually usurping Apocalypse's place, Nate escaped his confinement at a young age thanks to Cyclops, who left him in the care of Forge, who became a father figure to the boy. Nate grew up at his side to become a hero capable of singlehandedly defeating the likes of Holocaust.
"An Age of Apocalypse celebration wouldn’t be complete with X-MAN," Loeb said of the character's upcoming return. "I'm thrilled to return to mutantkind’s greatest psychic powerhouse, who's caught between two worlds as his home universe collides with his current one—with disastrous results! The X-Men of Apocalypse have arrived, but the Uncanny X-Men aren't going to be the most welcoming."
X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha #1 is set to serve as the starting point for the upcoming limited series, and will see the X-Men of the Age of Apocalypse leap the primary Marvel Universe in the hopes of saving their reality. As noted by the official solicit synopsis for the issue from Marvel Comics, the events of X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha #1 take place immediately after those of Loeb and Di Meo's backup story from Giant-Size Age of Apocalypse #1, "A Wrinkle in Time." The solicit synopsis for X-Men of Apocalypse Alpha #1 notes that the series "Reignites the mission of this iconic reality's X-Men as they journey here to ensure their universe's survival. This desperate mission will take them into the main Marvel Universe, where they will come into conflict with their classic counterparts, forever impacting both team's destinies!"

Since their debut in 1963, Marvel's X-Men have been more than just another superhero team. While the team really hit its stride as the All New, All Different X-Men in 1975, Marvel's heroic mutants have always operated as super-outcasts, protecting a world that hates and fears them for their powers.
Key members of the X-Men include Professor X, Jean Grey, Cyclops, Wolverine, Iceman, Beast, Rogue, and Storm. Often framed as the world's second strongest superheroes, after the Avengers, they are nonetheless one of Marvel's most popular and important franchises.
