A Classic Green Lantern Villain Just Proved How Powerful – And Terrifying – They Really Are

The following contains major spoilers for Green Lantern Corps #7, on sale August 13 from DC Comics.

One of the Green Lantern Corps' oldest enemies is just as strong as ever, and he's just one of an entire army of Sun-Eaters.

A preview for Green Lantern Corps #7 (by Morgan Hampton, Jeremy Adams, Fernando Pasarin, Oclair Albert, Arif Prianto, and Dave Sharpe) from DC Comics finds the denizens of the far-off planet Farengale wandering the streets in aimless droves after their emotions were stripped from them entirely. When an impossibly large figure looms overhead, the entire populace stares up in wonder, only to be obliterated entirely when their own sun explodes. As it turns out, this was all the doing of the dreaded Luciphage, and this is just the beginning of he and his fellow Sun-Eaters' crusade across the DC Universe.

Created by Mike Friedrich and Dick Dillin for the opening story of 1972's Justice League of America #96, "Meet the Cosmic Vampire!," the malevolent Luciphage, originally known as Starbreaker, is one of countless members of the Sun-Eater race. These peculiar energy vampires command vast power, all of which is fueled by destroying and consuming the energies of entire solar systems. In his earliest incarnation, Luciphage became a steadfast enemy of Adam Strange, who joined forces with the Justice League to bring about an end to the villain's then-ongoing reign of terror.

In recent months, the Luciphage of the primary DC Universe and his fellow Sun-Eaters have been given a chance to lord over the cosmos once more, thanks to the fractured emotional spectrum. Not only did this give them a chance to escape their former confinement, but it has also left the heroes who would normally face off against them spread incredibly thin. This, coupled with the help of like-minded villains like Sorrow, has paved the way for DC Comics' ongoing "Starbreaker Supremacy" storyline, which runs through the pages of multiple Green Lantern titles.

Speaking to CBR, writer Jeremy Adams discussed the presence of the Fractal Lanterns, characters like Sorrow, and how they play into the overarching plot that Starbreaker has been masterminding from afar. "You know what, with Sorrow in particular, it's very much just like the bookend of not just how Carol is to Hal," Adams explained, "And how Hal is to her, but also about how these offshoots will all have different issues, because they're all generated from a place of emotion, right? And you don't know HOW the emotions will split off. And I think that Starbeaker realizes that he can use some of these characters, so that'll be interesting."

Green Lantern Corps #7 goes on sale August 13 from DC Comics.
