Netflix's Skull Island animated series was a delightful surprise for followers of the MonsterVerse saga. The franchise has been hit or miss with its offerings, but the Netflix show proved animation is an ideal medium, channeling the suspense and action that made the original Kong: Skull Island film work.
Titan Comics and Legendary Comics are capitalizing on that success with Return to Skull Island #1, hitting comic stores July 9. The four-issue series is an official continuation of the animated series, picking up after Kong's battle with the Kraken. It's the exact kind of continuation MonsterVerse fans have been asking for.
Kong: Skull Island Comic Continuation Coming
Keeping the MonsterVerse Saga Alive in Comic Book Form Makes Perfect Sense
These days, franchises love expanding into other media to maintain dominance, and the MonsterVerse is no exception. Simon Furman (Transformers, Alpha Flight, Beast Wars, X-Men: Evolution) and Chris Jones (Young Justice, The Batman Strikes, Avengers: Earth's Mightiest Heroes, Doctor Who) are responsible for seeing this particular spinoff through. Their combined prowess makes them more than poised to tackle the iconic source material at their disposal, each boasting plenty of fan-favorite credentials.
Return to Skull Island fits into Legendary's MonsterVerse timeline, snug between the other comics and films. The new comic will pick up after Kong's battle with the Kraken, following survivors who return to the island only to discover what sounds like new enemies. The official press release breaks down the plot as:
