Duke Of The K-9 Patrol – Volume 01 Issue 01

“Breakdown”

The big football rally at State College was in full swing that evening. With so many students and fans in attendance, the local police captain had assigned a K-9 patrol unit to help curtail any high jinks. There has been tension between State and Poly College recently and some of the pranks pulled by both sides caused property damage.

Say hello to Police Sgt. Danny Nolan. His night is about to go from reprimanding drunken college kids to a full-on explosive standoff. With his trusty partner, Duke the police dog, Sgt. Nolan feels like he can handle anything. It’s time to get to work, Duke. Good boy!

“Dogs Versus Crime”

How effective is the use of police dogs in law enforcement? What year did the first patrol dogs begin to be used? Who is responsible for training such animals? You will find this and much more here in Duke of the K-9 Patrol.

“Friends Of Man”

You want to know about dog breeds? You have come to the right place. This article has an extensive history of dogs going back to the days of Babylon. The Metadata list for dogs has grown tenfold on the Relic Keep just from this briefing alone.

“The Masqueraders”

A crime wave has hit the city streets and Councilman Stan Ahlman wants answers before his hardware store is held up next. But who are the robbers in Halloween masks calling themselves the Masqueraders? As Sgt. Danny Nolan and his police dog Duke work the few leads they have; Councilman Ahlman is ready to defund the entire K-9 unit.

Can the city council be convinced to keep the K-9 program in place? Will a police dragnet stop the Masqueraders before one of their robberies turns lethal? Has Duke caught the scent of one of the perpetrators? Collect the series to find out!

“Six Keys To A Well-Trained Dog”

Is your dog a well-behaved animal? Follow these six keys to make you and your pet more happy and contempt. It’s all here on the back, inside cover.

Reviewer Notes

Even though this was a one-shot comic book, I really did enjoy reading about Duke and the history of police dogs. If you are a fan of vintage Gold Key Comics, or dogs in general, this will be a fun read.

Western Publishing always tried to both entertain and educate the youth of America with their products. It is quite evident here, and, in my opinion, should be a road map for modern age publishers. Kids definitely got their money’s worth back in the 1960s. I give Duke and his sidekick, Sgt. Danny Nolan, four out of five stars. This one’s a keeper.
