According to Absolute Universe architect Scott Snyder, the imprint's goal has never been to simply introduce darker versions of classic DC heroes. However, that is what Absolute Green Arrow did with its title character, and it has done it well.
The dark and demented reimagining of the normally heroic archer has made quite an impact on readers in only its first two months on the stands. In fact, the comic book series has proved successful enough to achieve an exciting new development in its longevity.
Absolute Green Arrow Extended To 12 Issues
It was confirmed on July 15, 2026, that Absolute Green Arrow has been extended to run for 12 issues by DC Comics. The title was originally slated to run as a six-issue limited series.
The series comes from the mind of writer Pornsak Pichetshote, who brings the same sinister imagination that put him on the map with his 2018 debut, Image Comics' acclaimed horror comic Infidel. He shared his excitement over Absolute Green Arrow's extension on Instagram.
The Eisner Award-winning, Thai-American writer had previously revealed in another social media post that he feared Absolute Green Arrow may take things too far with its graphic content and lose his audience too early. Well, it appears that the powers that be at DC have managed to stomach what he has delivered so far enough to demand more.
In fact, anticipation for its first issue, bolstered by an advertising campaign that leans heavily into the story's horror elements with a grindhouse-era-style trailer and more, was high enough to score a second printing even before its May 2026 debut. From the looks of it, Absolute Green Arrow's destiny as a 12-chapter story (at least for now) was already written in the stars.
Absolute Green Arrow Is The Grimmest Absolute Comic Yet
Image via DC ComicsIn his more traditional iterations, Green Arrow, who was created by Mort Weisinger and George Papp in 1941, uses his wealth and his incomparable archery skills to take down crime in Star City. In the Absolute Universe, however, he is not quite as noble.
Much of the story of Absolute Green Arrow follows a detective named Dinah Lance, whom DC readers may better recognize as Black Canary in other corners of the DC Multiverse, and her investigation of a series of brutal murders all connected by one recurring facet: arrows protruding from the victims' skin. Evidence suggests that this wicked Robin Hood is a copycat of the recently deceased Oliver Queen, who debuted and was last seen in the supervillain crossover special Absolute Evil #1 from Oct. 2025.
Absolute Green Arrow is illustrated by Rafael Albuquerque, who has drawn his fair share of beloved DC characters, from Batman to Blue Beetle. However, like writer Pornsak Pichetshote, the Brazilian artist also has plenty of experience with horror, such as his collaboration with Scott Snyder and Stephen King on American Vampire, which debuted in 2010.
On the same day that the series' extension was confirmed, Absolute Green Arrow #3 was also released. The new chapter sees Dinah Lance continue to struggle with the relentlessly unsettling and ever-traumatic developments of her case as she more obsessively pursues the Green Arrow Killer.
