Al Ewing has created a body of work at Marvel Comics that has made him one of the most exciting writers at the publisher. From hits like Immortal Hulk and Venom to cult-favourites such as Ultimates, Marvel readers are excited to follow the writer wherever he goes next in the Marvel Universe.
One of Ewing’s current projects is a run of Thor. Starting in 2023, the run has been a slow-burning meditation and deconstruction of storytelling. Ewing uses the character, derived from myth, to explore how storytelling has evolved through the ages. Readers witness interpretation of Thor from the primal to hyper-corporate, an exploration of the legacy hero concept, an issue that features a coin-flip mechanic, and much more. It’s a run that requires a deeper reading than your average Thor comic, which allows for a richer experience for those willing to do it.
Want to dive into this run? This reading order guide will help get you started. It has everything you need to know to read Al Ewing’s multi-act Thor run, listing the issues and collected editions, while also offering other valuable tips to make the reading experience simple.
Thor (2020 series) #1 cover by Oliver Coipel. Background reading
Do you want to do some background reading before jumping into Al Ewing’s Thor run? Here are a couple of suggestions.
Donny Cates Thor run a.k.a Thor (2020 series)
Donny Cates was the primary writer on Thor before Al Ewing. Along with artists Nic Klein and Michele Bandini, the run told stories that blended mythic and cosmic elements. However, it’s worth noting that this run didn’t receive a proper ending, with Cates unable to work due to a car accident.
However, it’s worth checking out if you want to get a better understanding of what’s going on with characters like Odin, Sif, Heimdall, and others.
Thor (1998 series) #68-79
This stretch of Thor comics by Dan Jurgens and Scot Eaton are referenced in The Immortal Thor and introduce a character from an alternate world. Check these issue out if you want to know more about that character (you’ll know which one I’m referring to when get to The Immortal Thor #17) and their background.
Loki: Agent of Asgard #1-17
This Thor run isn’t Al Ewing’s first foray into all things Asgard. With artists Lee Garbet and Jorge Coelho, he told a story that turned Loki – known for his lies and deceit – into a valuable asset for the realm. Find a preview of the first issue here.
Check out this series if you want to know how Al Ewing has written Loki in the past and how he redefined the character.
The structure of Al Ewing’s Thor run
Al Ewing’s run of Thor is composed of three acts.
The first act is The Immortal Thor, which launched in 2023. With artists like Martin Coccolo and Jan Bazaldua, Ewing explores and deconstructs concepts of storytelling by using Thor as the centrepiece. As a character who derives from myth and legend, The Immortal Thor tells stories that delve into the different interpretations of Thor to examine how the various storytelling modes elements shape our hero.
The second act is The Mortal Thor, a.k.a. Thor (2025 series). As the title suggests, this spotlights a Thor that’s now mortal but unaware of his past. He inhabits New York City as Sigrd Jarlson, accompanied by a very mortal hammer.
It’s unknown what the third act will be at this time. I’ll update this section when more details are available.

The series was originally announced as Thor (2025 series) to avoid spoilers for the conclusion of The Immortal Thor. As a result, some official Marvel listings continue to refer to it as that instead of The Mortal Thor.
