THOR #600 (2009)

1 day ago 23

Here’s the big 600th issue celebration.  That means we are transitioning from the 2007-2009 “Thor” series and back to the original Thor series that extended from Journey into Mystery.

For months we’ve been seeing Loki engineer a big plan, and this is where it goes into effect.  He magically brings Thor’s long-dead grandfather, Bor, back to life and sends him to Earth–and drives him mad will illusions.  The Dark Avengers fail to contain him, and it ends up being Thor’s fight–but Thor doesn’t know who Bor is.

Loki then tells Balder that Thor is fighting his own grandpa, and Balder rushes to New York City to stop the fight but is too late.

Thor kills Bor.

Side note: Love that panel, love the use of the sound effect.  It’s reminiscent of the best-ever Thor run, wherein Walt Simonson did his own lettering on panels like that and incorporated sound effects into the layouts and visual storytelling.

After Thor kills an ancient Asgardian, Balder has no choice but to cast him out of Asgard.

Thor responds with what sure looks like a threat.

In the chaos, Loki also sows the seeds for the second part of her plan: To move Asgard to Latveria.

A back-up feature written by Stan Lee, with art by David Aja, has “classic” Thor with the classic Avengers.

There’s also a fun mini-Marvels back up and a reprint to make this a thick issue worthy of the number “600.”
