The long-awaited return of Buffy the Vampire Slayer now has an official title, and fans are already talking. Hulu confirmed that the new series is called Buffy: New Sunnydale. The show is directed by Oscar winner Chloé Zhao, with Sarah Michelle Gellar stepping back into the role that defined her career.
Production sources say a pilot episode is already finished. The series introduces a new slayer named Nova, played by Ryan Kiera Armstrong, known from Star Wars: Skeleton Crew. The story follows a new generation while keeping ties to the original universe that aired from 1997 to 2003.
Speaking on the Shut Up Evan podcast, Gellar said the new show “is not a sequel” or “a reboot,” describing it instead as “a continuation.” She added that the title matters because it reflects both change and legacy. “It’s Buffy, but it’s also something else,” she said, explaining that it explores where her character is “now in this world.”
Gellar admitted that she once refused to revisit the role. “I learned my lesson,” she said with a laugh. “I never saw how it could be as good as the original. I’m not trying to be better. I just want to honor what we created.” She credited Zhao’s vision for changing her mind. “She knew what the world was and how to go into it,” Gellar said. “We spent three years talking, developing what it is and why it is.”
In a separate interview with IGN, Gellar promised the series would be “meaningful” for long-time fans. She pointed to the importance of the show’s themes. “The heart of Buffy was always found family — that sense of belonging and being loved for who you are,” she said. “That’s more important now than ever.”
The original show’s cultural influence remains undeniable. Without it, hits like Supernatural, True Blood, The Umbrella Academy, and The Chilling Adventures of Sabrina might never have taken shape. Analysts say the interest in reviving such legacy titles points to a broader trend in modern entertainment, where nostalgia carries real economic power. Fans, however, argue that one key returning character could determine whether Buffy: New Sunnydale succeeds or fades into reboot fatigue.
