Previously on Zephyr’s Journey
Doom Breaker is the story of Zephyr, the last human left alive. At the beginning of the story, he falls in battle against Tartarus, the Demon Lord. Sadly, humans didn’t stand a chance against the invading demon forces, and most went down without much of a fight. But fortunately for humanity, not all is lost, because where most stories would end, Zephyr’s is just beginning.
Rather than finding himself in the underworld, Zephyr awakens in the lowest level of the Pantheon of the gods. There, the angelic messenger Mercedes informs him that the gods haven’t fully abandoned humanity. In fact, they’d been helping Zephyr along on his mission with good luck — part of why he survived as long as he did.
But now, the gods want to witness a human resistance that’s a little more entertaining. As such, they’re giving Zephyr a second chance by reincarnating him to fight the battle for humanity once again. But there’s a catch. While he will retrain his memories of what’s transpired, he’ll lose the mana, physical training and acquired abilities he’d picked up during the duration of his doomed lifetime.
However, it isn’t only the eager divine audience who want Zephyr resurrected. Tartarus’ pride has been badly wounded by the fact that Zephyr was able to injure him in the fateful battle. He wants Zephyr resurrected so as to enjoy a second chance at ensuring that Zephyr fails to tarnish his perfect battle record. Zephyr agrees to be sent back to a random point in the past. And as he vows to dispatch Tartarus once and for all… and to teach those indifferent gods a lesson about the power of human resilience!
A Life Well Lived (Again)
Soon Zephyr awakens ten years earlier, when he was just twenty and a slave in a temple. But he soon learns that his resurrection has come with nine perks. With these high-level skills, he’s in a better position to make a successful stand against Tartarus. For one example, he gains the “Wall of Iron” skill, which significantly increases his durability.
But before Zephyr can successfully complete his mission, he’ll have to buy back his freedom from the temple where he’s enslaved. Fortunately, his nine new perks and his hidden knowledge prove invaluable. One of the best ways to get ahead are by undertaking dungeon crawls. There, Zephyr can face monsters who produce mana within their bodies. By harvesting the mana within the monsters, humans can attain valuable items, including weapons.
Zephyr swiftly transfers from the mining team to a hunting team. But it isn’t just demons and monsters he has to contend with. Soon he’s been flagged by an agent of the inquisition, part of a group of elevated slaves who are tasked with seeking out the cult of Tartarus worshippers. These worshippers will have had been responsible for the downfall of humanity. But while they share a common enemy, Zephyr is nevertheless forced to battle — and defeat — the inquisitor’s agents.
However, in order to advance, Zephyr must take out even more debt. And as we all know, sooner or later, debts must be repaid. Plus, while he now wields impressive power, Zephyr has already made some enemies among the humans. Complicating matters further, Ned Stryer, one of the Tartarus worshippers, thinks the demon lord sent Zephyr to fight against humanity. Meanwhile, Zephyr joins his new hunting party as they venture into a dungeon infested by giant spiders. But Zephyr’s skills make allies and enemies alike suspicious.
Doom Breaker, Vol. 2
In Doom Breaker, Vol. 2, despite their misgivings, Zephyr’s hunting party teammates have been sufficiently impressed by his skills to follow his lead as they seek out the dungeon’s black steel spider queen.
But it isn’t just dungeon crawling and monster battling for Zephyr. Now he has alliances, like the one he’s forged with Monster Broker White Rose, to preserve… and that’s on top of repaying his debts. Plus, that’s not to mention the fact that he’s caught the attention of Stryer, agent of the inquisition.
Can Zephyr hone his abilities to the point that he can emerge triumphant from the rematch with Tartarus? Will he be able to rescue his lost lady love in the process? And can he overcome rivalries old and new in order to ensure the survival of humanity?
