Amazing Spider-Man's upcoming 1000th issue just got a lot more terrifying. A new variant cover showcases Spider-Man taking on a monstrosity that looks straight out of a Junji Ito story.
The new variant was teased on X (formerly Twitter), where it was revealed to be drawn by Peach Momoko. Marvel previously announced details about the upcoming landmark issue, which will feature special anniversary stories by some of the industry's greatest creators. Amazing Spider-Man #36 (Legacy #1000) will go on sale Sept. 16 in a giant-size format. The new Momoko variant cover in all of its Ito-esque glory can be seen below.

Marvel has teased that it is pulling out all the stops to make Amazing Spider-Man's 1000th issue one for the record books, and the new Momoko variant certainly lives up to the hype. As for the story itself, it will be led by Joe Kelly and Pepe Larraz, serving as a culmination of their work on the title as well as a pivotal moment launching them into the next phase of their run.
In its press release for the issue, Marvel teased: "Spider-Man faces his greatest fear and his most frightening new villain in decades. Who is this Ravage? And how will his history-shattering power force Peter to question his very legacy? It’s one of Spider-Man’s most personal battles to date, and one that will shape his path for the next 1,000 issues!"
The issue also pulls out some of Spider-Man's most legendary creators over the years, including John Romita Jr., Frank Miller, Brian Michael Bendis, Dan Slott, J.M. DeMatteis, Marcos Martin, among others. Alien: Earth's Noah Hawley will also be making his Marvel Comics debut for the issue in an anniversary story titled 'Still Standing.'
Momoko's variant cover offers some insight into her own special story that will be included, created with Frank Miller. Titled "Tears of the Spider-Queen," it will pit Spider-Man against the deadly ninjas of The Hand.
"Our goal is to bring as many legendary Spider-Man artists together for this monumental celebration," Editor Nick Lowe explained.

"Writing Amazing Spider-Man #1000 has stirred up a lot of emotions for me, but gratitude is chief among them," Kelly shared in Marvel's press release. "It's a true honor to have the opportunity to contribute to Spidey's legacy with a huge milestone like this. And special bonus - we get to introduce a new villain?! Amazing. Ravage is layered and complex and mysterious, and I can't wait to unleash him on the readers with this monumental issue!"
Romita Jr. also reflected on Spider-Man's legacy and his work on the title. "What a pleasure it’s been to see readers celebrate my work on Amazing Spider-Man over the years and show support for the cover I did with Paolo Rivera for the upcoming issue #1000!" He added: "I’m honored to work on yet another milestone issue for Spidey, and this one is especially big—so big that it has not one but two primary covers, one by me and one by my fellow Amazing Spider-Man artist, Pepe Larraz! I hope everyone enjoys the issue, it’s going to be unforgettable!"

Since his first appearance in 1962, Spider-Man has almost always been Marvel Comics' most popular character. Known for his sense of humor and bad luck as well as his selflessness and super-strength, Spider-Man has helmed countless titles over the years, Spider-Man's most prominent comics include The Amazing Spider-Man, Web of Spider-Man, and Peter Parker, The Spectacular Spider-Man.
Peter Parker was the original Spider-Man but the Spider-Verse has become an important part of the character's lore in recent years. Multiversal and future Spider-Men include Miles Morales, Spider-Gwen, Miguel O'Hara and Peter Porker, the Spectacular Spider-Ham. This provided the premise for the popular Spider-Verse film trilogy, which makes Miles its primary hero.
