Plastic Man's quest to save his son just cost another DC icon his life.
After a disastrous meeting with the Justice League in the pages of Plastic Man No More! #3, the titular hero makes a last-ditch effort to get ahead of his own degenerative state that he fears will soon enough befall his son, Luke. Unfortunately, the only way that Plastic Man can see Luke being saved involves teaming up with some truly unnerving figures, drawing the attention of the hero's old friend and ally, Detective Chimp. Worse still, Plastic Man's new associates have no problems taking Detective Chimp out of the equation when he starts asking the wrong questions, nor with embarking on an even more lethel endeavor once the flames have died down.

Detective Chimp, or Bobo T. Chimpanzee, made his comic book debut all the way back in John Broome and Carmine Infantino's story "Meet Detective Chimp," from the pages of 1952's Adventures of Rex the Wonder Dog #4. Originally, Bobo was trained to mimic and grasp the most basic trappings and tropes of the classical detective, all as part of a carnival act. Soon enough, Bobo proved that he genuinely understood not just the basics, but the nuances of detective work, all by helping the police solve a legitimate criminal mystery. This cemented Bobo's place as Detective Chimp, though his presence in the DC Universe has been largely relegated to obscurity.
In more recent years, Detective Chimp has become one of the DC Universe's premier occult investigators. This has led various iterations of Detective Chimp to play a prominent role on teams such as Shadowpact and the infamous Justice League Dark. Apart from team-ups with the likes of John Constantine and Swamp Thing, Detective Chimp has also found a home for himself on the roster of primary Justice League lineups, standing as a testament to just how invaluable his presence is in uncovering even the deepest secrets.

Plastic Man No More! has completely shaken up its titular hero's world by subjecting him to an increasingly degenerative state after an act of unabashed heroism gone wrong. Writer Christopher Cantwell previously discussed some of his inspiration for the DC Black Label series, noting, "When I think about Plastic Man, I immediately think of David Cronenberg. There is an element of body horror to his story that I have always found fascinating." Cantwell continued, "And I also found myself wondering recently -- How would Plastic Man actually die? What would that look like? Is he immortal? And then I thought of the long and particularly nasty way real plastics and petroleum products break down when and if they finally do.”
