Annihilation: Heralds of Galactus #1-2 (2007)

These two issues are really an anthology of short stories about the former heralds who were not part of the final chapter of the main Annihilation series. They take place after Annihilus was “killed” (he’s not really dead). The covers of the two issues come together and form a nice poster by the great Gabriele Dell’Otto.

In the first story, Terrax escapes imprisonment by the Annihilation Wave and fights for survival on a distant planet.

Next, Stardust, a being actually made of stardust who was killed during the war, is able to pull itself back together and re-form–only to feed itself to Galactus. Essentially, Stardust kills itself out of love for the world-eater.

In issue #2, Firelord gets revenge on a bunch of Centurians–soldiers of the Annihilation Wave and then Silver Surfer kills the Proemial Gods. It is an act of vengeance on behalf of Galactus, for whom Surfer now serves as herald once again.

The battle is pretty epic. But Surfer wins of course.

It is disconcerting to see Surfer acting in an aggressive and murderous manner, but when you read the entire event his change of character makes sense.
