Bane co-creator Graham Nolan is not very happy about the character's redesign for DC Comics' Absolute Batman. Nolan called Bane's new look a "terrible abomination."
In a series of posts on X (formerly Twitter), Nolan shared a photo of Absolute Bane and wrote: "As the designer /co-creator of Bane...this is a terrible abomination." He also shared that he wasn't too impressed by Tom Hardy's portrayal of Bane in Christopher Nolan's The Dark Knight Rises. In response to a fan asking about Hardy's version of Bane, Nolan gave a thumbs-down emoji and said simply, "Fail!"

Bane is the latest character revealed to be joining DC's Absolute Universe, as part of the Absolute Batman comic book series. A recent teaser of Bane's design came along with solicits for Absolute Batman #9, which will go on sale June 11. While Nolan may not be impressed by it, Bane's Absolute Universe version is pretty similar to the character's classic appearance, with his usual mask and venom tubes, just with even more muscles.
Other DC villains who have been reimagined in the Absolute Universe include Mr. Freeze, Black Mask and The Joker, all of whom feel more unique compared to their main timeline counterparts than Bane. DC launched the Absolute Universe as part of its All In initiative that followed up on last year's Absolute Power crossover event. Its goal is to show DC's legendary heroes reimagined with different origins. Absolute Batman, for example, has no mansion, money or butler at his side, and the character is a lot darker and grittier as a result.
Fans' responses to Nolan voicing his opinion on Absolute Bane were largely mixed on X, with some questioning why there couldn't be more room for other artists to have creative license with the character. "Many have, and done excellent interpretations. [Absolute Bane] is not one of them," Nolan responded, later adding that there were several other versions of Bane that he did enjoy. Batman: The Animated Series, Young Justice and Arkham Asylum were among the top three portrayals of Bane to earn Nolan's seal of approval.

The character of Bane first appeared in Batman: Vengeance of Bane #1 back in January 1993, with Chuck Dixon and Doug Moench being credited for creating the character alongside Nolan. Over the years, Bane has become one of Batman's most significant villains, other than The Joker, and he is often seen as one of the few villains in Batman's rogues gallery who is able to push The Dark Knight both physically and mentally at the same time.
