Batman charges forward in Batman Gotham Knight Image via Warner Home Video

DC Comics is putting Batman's most lethal sidekick front and center in his own ongoing series.

Per a press release from DC Comics, Jason Todd will be taking the lead in a new ongoing solo-series - Red Hood. Written by Gretchen Felker-Martin and illustrated by Jeff Spokes with letters by Becca Carey, Red Hood will drop its titular antihero into the middle of New Angelique, a city filled to the brim with crime, corruption, and every vice imaginable. Soon enough, the Red Hood begins investigating a superpowered serial killer with a penchant for targeting cops, all while fellow Bat Family member Helena Bertinelli, better known as the Huntress, keeps her own eyes on Jason himself.

The Final Issues of Batman's Hush 2 are Facing a Delay

The last two issues of "H2SH" have become the latest in a long line of Batman titles to suffer serious delays at DC Comics.

DC Comics editor Arianna Turturro said of the upcoming series, "Red Hood is the in-continuity story Jason Todd fans have been waiting for. It delivers high-stakes action, a gripping mystery, and raw, unapologetic storytelling." Turturro continued, "Every element of the book highlights the core aspects of Jason’s character—his difficulties with personal connections, his badass training, his brooding hotness, and his violent approach to heroism. Which means he’ll be killing people—a lot."

"Jason isn’t a regular antihero who coldly does things their own way and feels nothing," Turturro added. "He is an exposed nerve, a beating heart with no protection, a man lashing out at both his world and himself for the violence he has survived. Helena deeply understands where Jason has come from. They're two severely broken people who can't help but hurt themselves and others… and together they might just end up bringing out each other’s worst instincts."

The next great antihero of the Spawn Universe is already being compared to characters from Storm to Witchblade, and they're not all that far off.

Writer Gretchen Felker-Martin promised readers that "Jason's going through hell on the hunt for an enigmatic telepath, and he's taking us with him. I'm thrilled to be helming this new run of Red Hood with Jeff Spokes." All the death and destruction that lies ahead in Red Hood shouldn't come as too much of a surprise for fans, especially considering the character's track record. Jason Todd has long been counted among the more vengeful and hot-tempered members of the Batman Family, and for good reason. Since his return from the dead and picking up the mantle of Red Hood, Jason has continuously proved himself to be the kind of hero that Batman simply cannot be, not to mention the kind of hero that New Angelique might just need based on how bad things look to be inside the city limits.

The mild-mannered Bruce Wayne becomes Gotham City's caped crusader, protecting it from villains like The Joker, Killer Croc, The Penguin, and more. Batman is also one of DC comics' "Big Three" alongside Superman and Wonder Woman, and together the three help keep the earth safe as founding members of the Justice League.
