Star Wars actor Temuera Morrison says it may be a long time before fans see Boba Fett again. After his well-received return in The Mandalorian Season 2, Morrison led the Disney+ series The Book of Boba Fett, which was expected to reignite interest in the iconic bounty hunter. Instead, the show left many fans disappointed. Two of its seven episodes shifted focus away from Boba Fett and toward Din Djarin, the main character from The Mandalorian. Even Morrison expressed frustration with how the story sidelined Fett.
During a 2025 appearance at the Tampa Bay Convention, Morrison told fans he wanted a second season. “All of you need to send a fax or letter or email to those powers that be at Lucasfilm,” he said at the time. The lighthearted comment reportedly did not sit well with Lucasfilm leadership. In an interview with Inverse, Morrison revealed that executives told him Boba Fett was “on the shelf.” He recalled, “I was only joking. I’m at a convention, and I say stupid things. Then I got [Lucasfilm] ringing me: ‘Look, you’ve been put on the shelf, Boba Fett. We might open up the jar later.’”
Morrison reflected on his time in the franchise, sharing how much he enjoyed his experience. “When you do a series like Boba Fett and work with Ming-Na [Wen], I started to think, ‘Man, this is it. I’m away. Season 2, 3, 4,’” he said. “But at the end of it, we had a great time. I was honored to be brought back after all that time. I’m Jango. I’m Boba. I’m Commander Cody. I’m all the clones. I’m Captain Rex. The list goes on, so I really can’t complain.”
The actor’s ‘dad bod’ probably didn’t helpMorrison first joined the Star Wars universe in 2002’s Episode II – Attack of the Clones, portraying Jango Fett, the bounty hunter whose DNA created both Boba Fett and the Clone Army. To preserve continuity, George Lucas later had Morrison redub Boba Fett’s lines in the original The Empire Strikes Back. Nearly two decades later, Morrison’s live-action version of Boba Fett reappeared in 2020’s The Mandalorian, setting up The Book of Boba Fett through a post-credit scene.
Despite involvement from high-profile creators Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni, and Robert Rodriguez, The Book of Boba Fett struggled to win over audiences. Fans criticized the decision to keep the story confined to Tatooine and portray Fett as a crime boss who wanted peace rather than conquest. The lukewarm reception now appears to have sidelined the character from future Disney+ projects. Boba Fett is not expected to appear in The Mandalorian and Grogu feature film or in Ahsoka Season 2, both set for release in 2026. His part in the planned crossover movie connecting the Disney+ Star Wars series also remains uncertain, if that film proceeds at all.
The Star Wars brand is entering a period of major transition. Kathleen Kennedy, who mishandled Lucasfilm since 2012, recently stepped down and was succeeded by Dave Filoni and Lynwen Brennan. While it isn’t looking promising, the upcoming The Mandalorian and Grogu will be the first theatrical Star Wars release in nearly seven years, following 2019’s The Rise of Skywalker. Disney’s focus has shifted away from streaming content toward a theatrical comeback, including Starfighter and a new Rey-centered film starring Daisy Ridley. As the studio resets its priorities, it seems some legacy characters like Boba Fett may be put on pause while Lucasfilm works to try and rebuild goodwill and momentum with a new generation of stories.
