Cable #21

6 days ago 12

After fighting the Brood in space, Cable and Hope are in escape pods, lying in stasis, hurtling back to Earth. The long flight gives her time to grow older.

They are still in the future, and land in the wreckage of post-apocalyptic New York City. They are still pursued by Bishop, and he attacks, firing his gun at Hope…

And she stops the bullet with her mind.

This is the first manifestation of her powers.

The second comes right after, when she fires a blast from her hands, incapacitating Bishop. She moves to kill him, but Cable stops her. Cable then uses tech from Bishop’s arm to repair his time-travel device and he and Hope leave Bishop in the future. Unbeknownst to them, though, Bishop is able to pursue them through the time warp they create.

This issue has the important development of Hope’s powers, but it feels like a waste of space given that they could have finally stopped Bishop–who has been chasing them for 21 issues. It’s also pretty out of character for Cable not to at least have killed Bishop himself.

This is technically the first issue of the “Homecoming” arc, but they don’t actually make it “home” (to present-day Earth 616) and it can serve as a standalone issue. It’s also a disjointed tale, with three different artists.

This has been a good series but this is not a great example of it.
