Jason is an award-winning journalist whose writing career dates back to when he developed the ability to use a crayon. He, most notably, worked previously as a "professional fan," as he likes to call it, at CinemaBlend, for which he wrote about anything and everything under the pop culture umbrella... especially Batman. His passion for the art of cinema began even earlier, stemming from repeat viewings of The Wizard of Oz.
This initially led him to pursue a career in filmmaking -- and even work briefly in the industry as an extra in the straight-to-video family film, Alice Upside Down -- before deciding that his talents would be better served discussing and showing appreciation for the various forms of entertainment he is passionate about.
Batman and Superman have had their fair share of unlikely team-ups, such as The Dark Knight's recent run-in with Deadpool and the Man of Steel's later crossover with Spider-Man. However, they may have found their all-time strangest ally in "Weird Al" Yankovic.
The DC heroes will embark on an adventure of ridiculous proportions with the master of comedic music in the upcoming one-shot Batman/Superman/Weird Al: World's Weirdest #1.
The special — the name of which is a perfect riff on the recurring title of many of Bats and Supes' previous adventures, World's Finest — sees a strange phenomenon occurring in the Fifth Dimension. Somehow, the most unusual places and unique people in the universe are suddenly becoming painfully mundane and frighteningly ordinary.
Of all people, the mischievous imp Mister Mxyzptlk takes a break from tormenting Batman and Superman and asks if they can help resolve the issue before Earth falls prey to the affliction. However, the Justice Leaguers come to realize that they are not equipped with the right skills to handle this unfamiliar task, leading them to enlist someone better versed in all things uncanny and eccentric, "Weird Al" Yankovic.
The Grammy-winning musician, known best for his hilarious parodies of hit pop songs (i.e., turning Michael Jackson's "Beat It" into "Eat It"), is credited with bringing "vibes" to the one-shot. However, the official writer of Batman/Superman/Weird Al: World's Weirdest #1 is Mark Waid, who is known for his acclaimed early 2000s reinvention of Clark Kent's origins, Superman: Birthright, and for penning a few editions of Batman/Superman: World's Finest.
Illustrating the one-shot is Dan Schoening, who designed the cover art for all four parts of another intriguing crossover, 2014's Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles/Ghostbusters, having also provided art for each nostalgia-fueled team's own comic book runs around the same time. Schoening is designing a foil variant cover for World's Weirdest that will be released alongside variants by fellow artists Mark Spears of Mark Spears Monsters fame, Green Wake's Riley Rossmo, and Clark and Lex illustrator Jerry Gaylord.
World's Weirdest Is Not Weird Al's Comic Book Debut
"Weird Al" Yankovic may be the last person anyone would have expected to see co-headlining a comic book with Batman and Superman. Indeed, this is the icon's first time appearing in a comic book in a main role, but it is certainly not his introduction to the medium.
The Lynwood, California, native technically joined the club of musicians who have appeared in comics in 1991 with the release of X-Factor #73, which mentions him as the composer of a parody of They Might Be Giants' "Particle Man" that pays tribute to the mutant Multiple Man. Twenty-five years later, he made a more prominent Marvel Comics appearance as himself in Spider-Man/Deadpool #6.
Yankovic also previously dipped his toes in the DC Universe when he appeared as "Totally Normal Al" on variant covers for two different annuals illustrated by Dan Mora, namely 2026's Bizarro: Year None #1 and Batman/Superman: World’s Finest #50 from 2022. Much earlier, he served as the guest editor for the 533rd issue of MAD Magazine
Some of Yankovic's best voice acting roles have also been in animated DC adaptations, such as when he played a lighter version of Darkseid on Teen Titans GO!, took a chilling turn as Dollmaker in the 2015 movie Batman vs. Robin, and voiced himself on Batman: The Brave and the Bold. In real life, he is currently traveling North America for his "Bigger and Weirder Tour."
Batman/Superman/Weird Al: World’s Weirdest #1 is set to hit the shelves on Sept. 2.
