This story takes place after X-Men #198, wherein a Shi’Ar soul eater attacked Cable’s island land of Providence and killed a bunch of people. Rogue defeated the threat in the X-Men story, so this takes place in the aftermath.

Cable decides he has to blow up his entire island because its sentient computer system has been corrupted. Sabretooth is causing problems. He kills Black Box.
Gambit, Senyaka and Sunfire show up with the Acolytes and try to stop Cable from destroying the computer system (this is crossing over with X-Men #200, apparently, which I haven’t read yet).

The thing is a mess.

Deadpool and his entourage show up in time to rescue Cable’s reporter friend, Irene Merryweather, before Sabretooth can kill her as well, and Domino gets her off of the island.
Deadpool leaves Cable to help others get evacuated.

And in the end…

Boom.
This is (yet another) “big” Cable epic where he dies at the end. How many times can they kill this guy?

Frankly, I think this was just an excuse to get him off the title banner so Fabian Nicieza could write a bunch of crazy solo adventures before ending the title. Next issue will be the obligatory “it’s so sad let’s remember Cable,” and then starting with #44 the title changes to a “team-up” style title where Cable’s name is crossed out on the covers and another heroe’s name replaces it until #50, where the logo is restored but the series ends.
