With the upcoming Fantastic Four: First Steps taking place in an alternate universe, fans have been speculating that we might get to see glimpses of other heroes from that universe.
The film stars Pedro Pascal as Reed Richards, Vanessa Kirby as Sue Storm, Joseph Quinn and Johnny Storm and Ebon Moss-Bachrach as Ben Gimm and is set in universe that looks like it spung out of the 1960’s imagination of FF co-creator Jack Kirby. Director Matt Shakman told Empire Magazine that the team is in their own universe and called it. “Wonderful and liberating”.
But he nixed the idea of super cameos, saying that there are “really no other superheroes” and “no Easter Eggs” in the film. But we know that the team will be heading into Avengers: Doomsday, and Shakman acknowledges that, “I love the interconnected Marvel Universe, but we get to do something so new and so different. Eventually this world will meet up with other worlds — but for now this is our own little corner.”
Seems like a good idea to spend a movie on just them before throwing them into the MCU proper. However, according to some attendees at CinemaCon last week, the casting of Pedro Pascal and the female Silver Surfer is not sitting well with fans.
Here’s what they had to say over at Film Threat:
The first major concern was Pedro Pascal’s portrayal of Reed Richards, which many felt lacked the character’s traditional leadership qualities. Pascal’s mopey demeanor and apparent lack of confidence did not resonate with fans who are expecting a commanding and intellectually formidable Reed Richards. Additionally, the depiction of a female Silver Surfer, Shalla-Bal, played by Julia Garner, faced criticism for its digital effects, which were unfavorably compared to Doug Jones’s version in Fantastic Four: Rise of the Silver Surfer (2007). Despite these criticisms, the film’s premise, which involves the Fantastic Four confronting cosmic threats, holds potential.
The due did agree that the storyline appears to include some emotional depth, such as Sue Storm’s pregnancy. Vanessa Kirby’s portrayal of Sue Storm was also very well-received. However, some of the casting choices were underwhelming, leaving some to worry that Fantastic Four: First Steps will face challenges in fully winning over its audience despite its ambitious scope.
