DC Corrects the Supergirl's Biggest Movie Mistake

The DCU may have hit a stumble with the recently released Supergirl failing to live up to expectations, but DC Comics is already course correcting by giving the character everything the movie failed to deliver. DC's 'Summer of Supergirl' kicked off in June, and it's setting the character up for a bigger and better future.

The Summer of Supergirl Special was released just two days before the Supergirl film hit theaters, and now even more exciting developments are hitting Supergirl's ongoing mainline DC Comics series. Supergirl #15 was released on July 8 and concluded a major battle, all while giving Kara Zor-El exactly what she needs to set herself apart from Superman. She has a new costume and a new team at her fingertips.

DC Gives Supergirl a New Comics Team After DCU Movie's Box Office Woes

The solicit for Supergirl #15 promised readers a battle between Supergirl and Black Flame, and the stakes were seemingly higher than the DCU counterpart. "As Supergirl starts to gain the upper hand, Black Flame spots an opportunity to escape Kandor and bring the fight to Earth."

Kara's enemy in the comics' story was fueled by something that she understands very well. "Powered by the yellow sun, this Kandorian rebel could be unstoppable. It's now up to Supergirl to rein her in before the entire planet ends up in danger!"

At the end of the issue, Supergirl is able to save the day — and after all is said and done, she experiences the character growth that fans were hoping to see in Milly Alcock's debut as Kara on the silver screen. "I need to rally other heroes," Supergirl says in the new story. "I need to be a leader."

She's not wasting any time either; Supergirl has already founded her own team of heroes dubbed the Super-Force. The up-and-coming team includes Lena Luthor, Princess Shark, Nightflame, Lana Lang and Thundergirl, all with Supergirl finally being the leader. Even bigger additions — and some familiar faces — are also on the way to join her.

DC's solicit for Supergirl #16 reveals that Supergirl will be adding Superboy-Prime, Conner Kent, Tomorrow Man, Lois Lane, Steel and Natasha Irons to her team as they try to infiltrate the Kryptonite Kingdom of El Caldero after it is taken over by General Zod. That issue goes on sale Aug. 12, 2026.

Supergirl's Silver Screen Future Remains Bleak

While Kara is certainly thriving in DC's comics universe, her DCU debut definitely didn't go off as planned. Released on June 26, the film saw Alcock's Supergirl stopping at nothing to save her dog Krypto, even coming across Jason Momoa as Lobo. Despite pulling out all the punches, the DCU's latest effort just hasn't been resonating with audiences, with some saying it was because it changed the ending to its comic source material.

As a result, the film received mixed reviews from critics and has only been able to gross $116 million against its $170+ million budget. In its second weekend in theaters, ticket sales were reported to have dropped by around 80% — making it the second-worst drop in comic book movie history, with only Joker: Folie à Deux (81%) narrowly edging out with a slightly worse performance.
