Growing up in rural Iowa as a reluctant reader, it all changed when he started reading the original Fantastic Four by Lee/Kirby. Now Austin can't stop reading. He has written about comics for Comic Book Yeti and he has also written tons of indie comics, best known for Big Guns Stupid Rednecks.
Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta's Absolute Batman has been rolling out incredibly striking new designs for classic Batman villains. Clayface is rumored to appear soon, with his design confirmed by Snyder himself.
“We talk all day, every day. I can show you my phone. Nick and I already texted like five times today about Clayface designs. Nick has become one of my best friends in the world," Snyder said during an interview with Comics Central.
While readers have long anticipated Clayface appearing in the Absolute Universe, this shapeshifting mound of clay has already been hinted at ahead of his eventual arrival. In Absolute Batman #10, Bruce stumbles upon the K.L.A.Y. biome. Though the “C” has been replaced with a “K,” fans strongly doubt the changes will end there.
Clayface Might Terrify Readers With His Shape-Shifting Body Horror

He lives on the other side of the ocean, right there. He takes a boat ferry over, and we work in my office. Every couple of weeks, we get together in person, and we do the designs, and we go back and forth, and we lay out the issues. It’s super collaborative. I can’t say enough good things about what a great partner he is.”
The pressure of Absolute Batman’s success doesn’t seem to have phased the two creators, as they continue to deliver a masterclass in storytelling that has brought many new readers into comic books. Working on Absolute Batman seems to have made Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta almost as close as brothers. Only time will tell whether they remain friends or eventually turn on each other.
The original Clayface first appeared in Detective Comics #40, published all the way back in 1940. Since his inception, many different people have taken on the mantle of Clayface. His ability to shapeshift makes him especially dangerous to not just Batman, but other heroes as well. Clayface has even bested Wonder Woman by absorbing some of the magical clay from which she was created.
Clayface has not only appeared in comics but has also made his way into numerous other media, including video games, live-action movies, and animated series. A solo feature film centered on the character is scheduled for release in 2026 and is expected to lean heavily into body horror.
Little is known about the new Absolute Universe take on the character. Is it someone readers already know or a new character entirely? Will this Clayface be as deadly as he has been in the past or even more fearsome? With the anticipation of an impending solo film, DC would be wise to use the character heavily in the comics. The only thing that fans know for sure, is that he is on his way.
