Has Marvel and DC Comics crossover before?

They have! Marvel and DC Comics have had occasional intercompany crossovers since the 1970s. These often feature heroes from different companies meeting, getting into a conflict, then joining forces to save the day. However, the 1990s featured some more out-there ideas, with the most notable being Amalgam, a mash-up of two characters together.

However, the 21st century has been quiet for Marvel and DC crossovers. The last time it happened was in 2003 with JLA/Avengers.

The reading order for this intercompany crossover is rather simple, with readers only requiring to read two oversized comics. These are:

The following crossover stories will be featured in Batman/Deadpool #1:

Batman/Deadpool story

Grant Morrison and Dan Mora give their version of when Batman and Deadpool collide. DC Comics has described it as a “metaphysical car crash between two storytelling philosophies.”

John Constantine/Doctor Strange story

The top magic users of both publishers come together in what will likely be clashing philosophies in magic-use.

Tom Taylor reunites with the characters that made him a fan-favourite, brining his Nightwing collaborator along with him.

Will there be future Marvel/DC Comics crossovers?

Don’t hold your breath on there being more Marvel/DC Comics crossovers any time soon. In the original announced through Entertainment Weekly, Jim Lee (DC Comics Publisher, President, and Chief Creative Officer) stated:

“The timing has to be right in that you don’t want to do these too often. You want them to feel special. It is sort of finding that right moment for both companies to come together because it is complex. There’s a lot more coordination, collaboration, approvals that have to be done. And, obviously, from the business side, you’re sharing revenue, but it’s going to be a big deal. So you want the story, creatively, to warrant the hype of it all.”

That makes a lot of sense. They wouldn’t feel special if it happened all the time. The novelty would wear off and all the effort that goes into making these crossovers wouldn’t be worth it.
