Disney has a Star Wars problem that another giant budget won’t solve. Its famous logo can still get people’s attention, but it can’t make them buy tickets, or subscribe to Disney+, and it certainly can’t make them love what the studio has done with a property they once treasured. Star Wars: Starfighter, starring Ryan Gosling, is the next big release, and already it’s saddled with a reported production bill large enough to make even a studio accountant reach for the emergency exit. According to Forbes, Disney disclosed that the film had cost $226.5 million by the time filming ended. That topped the amount spent at the same stage on Star Wars: The Force Awakens, which until recently held the record as the most expensive movie ever made. That may be a spending milestone.
