Dynamite Entertainment have announced a brand new special, Red Sonja Noir, to be written by fan-favorite writer David Avallone (Drawing Blood) and artist Edu Menna (Quarry’s War). When announcing the series, Dynamite stated:
The ultimate femme fatale has featured in so many different kinds of stories through the years, from her flagship sword and sorcery adventures, to genre twists, and unexpected crossovers. This summer fans can enjoy the miraculous results of when Hyrkanian steel mix with pulp adventure. The crimson-haired heroine of song and legend muscles her way into trouble once more in the hard-boiled Hyborian Age.
The special will be 28 pages long and feature cardstock covers, perfect for collectors. This alternative take on the character will focus on Red Sonja’s quest for vengeance after a mercenary partner of hers is murdered in cold blood. She finds herself in the middle of a conflict for a mysterious and priceless artifact, the Crimson Calypso. Battling through webs of deception, she will have to use her wits and her might to take down her foes. Influenced by the aesthetics and storytelling techniques of classic noir films, it might not be what Red Sonja fans are used to, but is sure to be an interesting take on the legendary comic book character.
David Avallone made his debut with the character in the pages of Red Sonja: Black, White, Red, as well as paying homage to ger in the comic Bettie Page Unbound. With his contributions to The Shadow, Zorro, and more, Avallone is experienced in the fields of pulp fiction and noir, and will surely bring his best to this unique interpretation of the Red Sonja character, exciting fans whilst also telling an interesting story.
Edu Menna has become renowned for his atmospheric, moody artwork on titles like Army of Darkness 1979, Alice Cooper, and more. This is actually a return to the character for Menna as well, a decade in the making, following his work on Red Sonja Annual #4 from Dynamite’s original ongoing for the character. His visual flair is sure to add to this take on the character, enriching Avallone’s script.
Red Sonja Noir will release this June from Dynamite Entertainment and is available for pre-order now.
