BOOM! Studios just gave fans their first look at the new Mouse Guard.
In a press release from BOOM! Studios, the next addition to the Mouse Guard franchise is officially set to arrive in March in the form of Mouse Guard: Dawn of the Black Axe. Written by original creator David Petersen and featuring illustrations from acclaimed Locke & Key artist Gabriel Rodriguez, Mouse Guard: Dawn of the Black Axe is set to bring readers back to before the events of the main series, all the way to the foundation of the eponymous Mouse Guard themselves.

Petersen's original six-issue Mouse Guard premiered in 2006 and quickly established itself as a fan-favorite. Set in a version of the world in which mice and other animals live out fantastical stories dripping in medieval trappings and tropes. Although the world of Mouse Guard closely parallels our own, there are no humans within it to terrorize or delight the series' miniscule cast of characters. Mouse Guard focuses on the lives and times of its eponymous group, formed after a horrible war against a weasel warlord back in 1149, who serve as scouts, pathfinders, guardians, and warriors all the same.
Since the release of the original Mouse Guard, the series has been expanded through various followups. The first of these, Mouse Guard: Winter 1152, is a direct sequel to the first series. This was followed by Mouse Guard: Spring 1153, which carried on the story of its preceding volume, Mouse Guard: Black Axe, which served as a prequel to the original series, and Mouse Guard: Legends of the Guard, an anthology comic set in the fantastical world of Mouse Guard. In 2021, Mouse Guard: The Owlhen Caregiver was released to the delight of fans everywhere. Although Petersen had previously planned on released a Mouse Guard: The Weasel War of 1149, the title has been particularly slow coming for various reasons.

Per the official synopsis for Mouse Guard: The Black Axe from BOOM! Studios, "The origins of the legendary Black Axe are revealed in this prequel story set in the earliest point in the Mouse Guard history. Adventure with the ancient weapon’s first mouse wielder and champion, Bardrick, as he sets off on an epic quest of good versus evil!." Fans can expect the series to arrive in comic book stores everywhere on March 19, and is currently available for pre-order through various retailers and online platforms.
Mouse Guard: Dawn of the Black Axe #1 will be available on March 19 from BOOM! Studios.
