It has been more than two years since James Gunn announced the first slate of DCU movies called “Gods & Monsters.” Now, in 2025, the rebooted DC Studios is set for a major year with the release of Superman, the DCU’s first big-screen feature. This year also marks a change for the studio, as it is the first time a previously announced movie has been canceled by Gunn and the studio. DC Studios still has several films in development, including The Brave and the Bold, The Authority, a horror movie about Swamp Thing, and a new Wonder Woman reboot. Most of these are expected to reach theaters, but Gunn is making sure only the best scripts move forward.
In a recent Rolling Stone cover story, James Gunn talked about DC Studios, Superman, and his high standards for every new script. As both director and co-president, Gunn explained that the studio has already canceled its first project. “We just killed a project,” Gunn said. “Everybody wanted to make the movie. It was greenlit, ready to go.” He said the script was not good enough for DC Studios, and he did not want to rush a movie that was not ready. Gunn said, “The screenplay wasn’t ready. And I couldn’t do a movie where the screenplay’s not good.”
Gunn did not say which project was canceled because of the bad script. It is not Supergirl, since that movie just finished filming. Gunn also said it is not Clayface, because that script is “so f*cking good.” Some have suggested he may be talking about The Batman: Part II and a few online rumors speculated it might be The Authority, since there are reports about problems with the development of each of those films, but that is just speculation for now.
As co-president of DC Studios and the writer and director of Superman, Gunn is focused on getting fans excited about the other upcoming DCU movies. He is not just saying these new projects are good, he is calling them “so f*cking good.” Gunn said, “And we’ve been really lucky so far, because Supergirl’s script was so f*cking good off the bat. And then Lanterns came in, and the script was so f*cking good. Clayface, same thing. So f*cking good. So we have these scripts that we’ve been really lucky with or wise in our choices or whatever the combination is.“
Let’s hope Clark Kent doesn’t have a similar penchant towards profanity.
Before any of those movies come out, Superman has to prove itself at the box office. The movie opens in theaters on July 11, and the early signs are strong, since it already broke the record for the highest first-day ticket sales of any movie in 2025, and that was just from special early screenings for Amazon Prime members, not the regular theater release. After Superman, Supergirl is the next DCU movie, set to hit theaters on June 26, 2026.
