As X-Men '97 has continued with a number of blockbuster episodes, it appears clear that we are nearing the return of Gambit to the series after his dramatic sacrifice last season. And wouldn't you know it, the same week it appears that he might be returning on X-Men '97, he will be receiving a brand-new series from Marvel, kicking off a new comic book era for Gambit.

In the preview pages for Gambit: Wanted #1, we see Gambit's adventures pick up from the last Gambit series written by Chris Claremont, which took place during the period when Gambit first teamed up with a de-aged Storm. At the time, Ororo didn't have access to her memories, and Gambit saved her from an attack (he was robbing a place where she was) and the two became traveling companions.
Her memory returned, and she and Gambit reunited with the X-Men, or at least the remnants of the X-Men, as Forge and Banshee had been trying to put the X-Men back together, and was working with X-Factor (the original X-Men) to do so. Claremont smartly glosses over that aspect of the story in these pages.
He leaves it as Ororo is reunited with the X-Men, and Gambit takes a leave from her for a bit to return to New Orleans to both celebrate Mardi Gras, but also reunited with the Thieves Guild, where he discovers that he is not exactly being welcomed back with open arms after he essentially abandoned the Guild for his cross-country adventures.
His successor has gotten the Thieves Guild into some trouble, and Gambit is going to have to get them out of it, and you'll have to pick up a copy of Gambit: Wanted #1 next week to find out what that trouble is (and how it involves the maniacial Bullseye!).
