Hawkeye’s Return: Renner’s Recovery Is Real, But Does Marvel Want Him Back?

Jeremy Renner is gradually returning to acting after a serious snowplow accident in 2023. Fans of Marvel’s cinematic universe have been curious about whether he will return to his role as Clint Barton, also known as Hawkeye. Renner had previously cast doubt on reprising the part after he reportedly turned down a second season of the Disney+ series Hawkeye due to a pay dispute. Now, he has offered a more hopeful update suggesting he might reprise the role.

Renner was severely injured in the snowplow accident while trying to protect his nephew. The actor was pulled under the snowplow tracks but has made significant progress since the incident. Earlier this year, he marked what he called his second “rebirthday” to celebrate surviving the accident. In a recent interview with Empire magazine, Renner shared details about his recovery and hinted that he feels ready to take on more physically demanding roles again.

He said, “I’m always happy to be in that world, man. I love all those guys, I love the character.” Many viewers had hoped he would reunite with Hailee Steinfeld, who plays Kate Bishop, for a second season of Hawkeye. Renner reassured fans that a return to the MCU is possible, explaining, “I’m sure we’ll end up doing Season 2, and do other things. And I’m happy to do it. My body’s getting ready for something like that. I don’t know if anybody wants to see me in tights, but my body will look good in the tights.”

About a year ago, Renner said he did not have the energy to take on challenging roles. He made his acting comeback roughly a year after the accident, starting work on the third season of Mayor of Kingstown. Later, he joined the cast of Rian Johnson’s Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, a project Renner compared to working on a Marvel movie. However, his name was missing from the cast list for the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday film, leaving uncertainty about his MCU future.

Renner’s rehabilitation has involved intense physical training and mental work. He says he can now perform Hawkeye’s signature moves, like the jump, twist, and shoot, without difficulty. In the interview with Empire, he explained how fitness has become an important part of his daily routine. He stated, “I’m more than 150 per cent of what I was prior to the incident. Having health and wellness be such a central part of my life, that’s what’s gotten me back. And even as I age, I just feel stronger than I’ve been. I have some issues, and tendon issues and certain limitations of flexibility and mobility, but I spent a lot of time on getting better and stronger, and I wouldn’t if I didn’t get crushed.”

Whether Renner will appear in one of the two upcoming Avengers movies, Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars, or the second season of Hawkeye remains to be seen. His recent comments offer encouragement to fans who want to see his Clint Barton return to action.
