Star Wars fans may see the return of Ewan McGregor as Obi-Wan Kenobi. Since the first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi came out on Disney+ in 2022, there has been almost no news about the show. Now, a new rumor suggests that a second season is being planned. The report comes from Daniel Richtman, but there are no other details, so nothing is confirmed yet. McGregor has said many times that he wants to return as Obi-Wan, so this rumor could have some truth to it.

The first season of Obi-Wan Kenobi received an 82% score from critics on Rotten Tomatoes, and the audience score was far lower at 61%. This makes it one of the lowest-rated Disney Star Wars shows, only higher than much maligned The Acolyte, according to Rotten Tomatoes rankings. The show did not get a warm response from many viewers, and it joins other recent Disney projects, like Ironheart, which also received very poor reviews. Many fans feel that Disney’s recent Marvel and Star Wars shows have not met expectations.
After its release, Disney promoted Obi-Wan Kenobi as a limited series and even pushed it for awards. It was nominated for Outstanding Limited Series at the Primetime Emmys in 2023 but lost to Netflix’s Beef. If the show does return for a second season, it would not be the first time a so-called limited series got more episodes. Still, with nearly three years since the first season and Lucasfilm working on other projects, it is surprising that the studio might bring McGregor and the rest of the cast back.
Before Obi-Wan Kenobi became a streaming series, it was first imagined as a movie trilogy. Writer Stuart Beattie pitched the idea to Lucasfilm soon after Disney bought Star Wars. He explained, “When Disney took over, I thought they were probably going to do an Obi-Wan movie because that’s the one everyone wants but I wasn’t hearing anything about it. So, I started coming up with my own ideas and went up to Lucasfilm and pitched them. That’s what actually got the ball rolling, since they were busy with Rogue One and Solo: A Star Wars Story.” Beattie also said, “They did ask me in the meeting if it was a movie or a show, and I said, no, it’s a movie, it’s actually three movies I had planned for him [Obi-Wan]. Then it wasn’t until a year later they were like, hey, let’s do it as a show.”
There is not much hope among fans that a new season of Obi-Wan Kenobi will fix the problems seen in the first season. Many are still waiting for Disney and Lucasfilm to deliver a Star Wars show that lives up to the original movies and earlier series. Forgive me if I don’t have very high expectations anymore.
