CAPTAIN AMERICA #31-36 (2007-2008): The Burden of Dreams

The full title for this story arc is “The Death of Captain America, Act 2 – The Burden of Dreams: Parts One through six.”. That’s a mouthful.

Cap is dead.  Sharon Carter is torn up that she was the actual assassin–even though she was being mind-controlled by Dr. Faustus.  Bucky is captured and Faustus is trying to brainwash him into hating Captain America, but Bucky’s mind is stronger than he thought.  Falcon and Black Widow are recovering after being shot by Sharon Carter (still being mind-controlled).  Tony Stark now knows that Red Skull is back, and Crossbones is on the loose.  Red Skull is occupying the body of Aleksander Lukin and standing up his own personal army to overthrow the America government.

After weeks of attempts to brainwash Bucky Barnes, Widow and Falcon finally find his location and free him–although Faustus escapes.

Barnes is then taken into SHIELD custody for all kinds of reasons, and they take off his artificial arm.  Detached, the arm comes to life and frees Bucky, who escapes his cell and faces off against Iron Man.  But rather than re-arrest him, Tony offers Bucky the role of “new Captain America,” and Bucky agrees as long as he doesn’t have to answer to Tony Stark.

Thus, we now have an official new Captain America.

He gets good at it real fast.

Who also carries a gun.

In his first mission, Barnes and Black Widow stop AIM from robbing a gold reserve.  Although this mission is successful, at the same time a bunch of Faustus-controlled SHIELD operatives arrive at the White House and gun down protesters.

That’s followed by a full-scale riot (artificially brought about by “fear chemicals”), during which Crossbones, Sin and the Serpent Society attack the White House and Bucky Captain America saves the day.

During the battle, Sharon Carter is back at the bad guys’ headquarters and breaks into Arnim Zola’s lab.  Sharon is struggling to shake off Faustus’ brainwashing, but finds Steve Rogers in a body tank.

I’m counting that as a “hero in a clear tube” because it’s close enough and I love using that tag (below).

Another fantastic chapter in this epic saga.
