Spider-Man and Peter Parker Confront Each Other, And The Final Reveal Is a Total Shock

6 days ago 16

Peter Parker has just come face-to-face with a whole new kind of Spider-Man, and both of them know that neither is who they appear to be.

After weeks of ignoring his closest loved ones, pushing away his allies, and outright ignoring the Shocker's recent crime spree, The Amazing Spider-Man #10 (by Joe Kelly, Michael Dowling, Marte Gracia, Erick Arciniega, and VC's Joe Caramagna) sees its titular hero begin making up for things, even if only one at a time. With a brutal disregard for his enemies, Spider-Man tears his way through New York City, breaking bones and sending messages wherever he decides. By the time his work is done, Spider-Man seems like he is finally ready to call it a night, at least until he comes across a Peter Parker. Or rather, someone pretending to be Peter, just as he has been pretending to be Spider-Man.

Spider-Man's latest bout of nihilism was brought on by the emergence of the enigmatic Hellgate, an imposing figure wielding supernatural powers who only a few short issues ago. When Hellgate first appeared, he seemed like a potentially benevolent figure, albeit one who put an end to Spider-Man's problems in explosive fashion. Soon enough, however, the Wall-Crawler himself was on the receiving end of Hellgate's fury, and they left Peter battered, broken, and with a dire warning of just how much the hero is truly lacking.

Since then, Peter has been on the mend physically, but he seems to have given up entirely on his superheroic endeavors. Rather than attempting to offer aid to the people caught in Shocker's crime spree, Peter has chosen to simply walk away from any fights that come his way. To make matters worse, Peter even turned his back on his longtime romantic interest, Mary Jane Watson, when she came to him looking for help with her current status as the human host to the Venom symbiote.

While the revelation that the Peter Parker and Spider-Man at the heart of the series' action aren't who they say they are certainly comes as a surprise, Marvel did already let readers know that new versions of the character would be making their way into the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man sooner or later. This November, both issues #15 and #16 of The Amazing Spider-Man will feature some drastically different takes on Spider-Man. The official solicit synopsis for Amazing Spider-Man #15 reads, "Not only does Spider-Man learn aspects of his quest that he didn’t expect, but his companions learn things about Spider-Man that THEY didn’t expect. Witness the first full appearance of a new major character!" Amazing Spider-Man #16 is also set to mark the debut of a new character in the form of Kintsugi, a teenage superhero who will make their first appearance alongside that of a new villain, Plague RX.

The Amazing Spider-Man #10 is available now from Marvel Comics.
