Henry Cavill’s ‘Voltron’ Reboot Lands a 2027 Release

Henry Cavill is preparing for another major leap into classic pop culture as Amazon MGM Studios moves ahead with its live-action reboot of Voltron. After years of development delays, the sci-fi action film now has a release window set for 2027, according to producer Todd Lieberman, founder of Hidden Pictures. The movie brings the 1980s animated favorite back to life for a new generation, with Cavill joining a high-profile cast and an ambitious production schedule already underway.

Voltron tells the story of five young pilots who control massive robotic lions that combine to form a single, galaxy-saving super-robot. Cavill will play King Alfur, a fallen ruler from the planet Altea and a figure central to the saga’s mythology. Sterling K. Brown, known for his roles in Paradise and American Fiction, co-stars as the villain Zarkon. Rita Ora, who appeared in Fifty Shades of Grey and Southpaw, is reportedly portraying Witch Haggar, another of the film’s antagonists.

The movie’s young lead will be newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye, portraying a boy who inherits one of the mechanical lions and soon becomes a key member of Team Voltron. The supporting cast includes John Harlan Kim, Alba Baptista, Samson Kayo, Tharanya Tharan, Laura Gordon, Tim Griffin, and Nathan Jones. The project is directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber, known for Red Notice and Skyscraper, who has said the film will “introduce an entirely new generation of pilots” while honoring the original storylines.

Rumors suggest this adaptation focuses on the Voltron: Defender of the Universe series that ran for 124 episodes in the mid-1980s and helped anchor a wave of American fascination with Japanese-style animation. The modern version will reportedly explore themes of legacy and courage, with a storyline centered on a grieving Earth teen who learns his late mother was once a Voltron pilot. After a deadly attack led by Zarkon, the young hero must overcome fear and doubt to reunite the team and defend Altea from destruction.

If production stays on schedule, Voltron could help cement 2027 as a major year for Cavill, who is also headlining another 80s revival with a reboot of Highlander. That project, directed by John Wick creator Chad Stahelski, is currently in production and will also be distributed by Amazon MGM Studios. Together, both titles signal Hollywood’s continued push to reimagine familiar franchises for younger audiences, even as longtime fans watch closely to see whether these reboots can match the originals’ staying power.
