After months of talk about who would play the main villain in James Gunn’s follow-up to Superman, it’s now official. The next film, Man of Tomorrow, will feature Brainiac as its central threat. However, few saw the actual casting choice coming. German actor Lars Eidinger landed the role after names like Matt Smith, Claes Bang, and Sam Rockwell were heavily rumored. Even Eidinger seemed surprised by the announcement.
The 50-year-old actor has spent more than two decades in front of the camera but has rarely made Hollywood headlines. His past credits include Disney’s 2019 live-action Dumbo, the 2022 film White Noise, and last year’s Jay Kelly. Television fans may also recognize him from Netflix’s Sense8 and All the Light We Cannot See in 2023. Still, portraying Brainiac marks a major jump into blockbuster territory. Speaking in an interview shared on social media, Eidinger called the casting “a miracle.” He said, “I always thought, I’m 50 now, that’s it, and it suddenly happened. It all went relatively quickly, and I really can hardly believe it.”
Eidinger also made it clear that he knows fame does not arrive overnight. “It’s not as if you snap your fingers and you’re sitting on the beach in LA,” he said. “First, we’ll film the movie. I’m very excited.”
Director James Gunn appears to have followed his typical casting approach by focusing on talent rather than hype. His choice continues a trend that began when he cast David Corenswet as the DC Universe’s new Superman. Corenswet was not one of the industry’s top names, but Gunn praised his performance and dedication. In a previous statement, Gunn said, “All of them were people who came in and auditioned and weren’t thought of as ‘movie stars.’ I’m always interested in casting the best person for the role, no matter what route that takes.”
Gunn’s history supports that view. His long-time collaborators, such as Chris Pratt, Dave Bautista, and Karen Gillan, were not household names before they starred in his films. Over time, those choices helped launch major careers. While Gunn often brings back familiar faces like Michael Rooker or Nathan Fillion, his casting for Man of Tomorrow shows that he values strong performances over celebrity status.
With Eidinger stepping into the role of Brainiac, expectations are high for the next chapter in the DCU. Man of Tomorrow is set to follow this summer’s Supergirl and the October release of Clayface. Fans are watching closely to see if Gunn’s signature method once again turns an unexpected casting decision into a breakout success story.
