The Smurfs are an international sensation. Depending on your age, it’s likely you know them from the 1980s animated series or the more recent films. Perhaps you’ve seen neither of those but are familiar with the little blue gnomes through their extensive merchandising, which has featured the characters in toys, collectables, video games, and even theme parks.

But did you know that The Smurfs originated in comics? I wouldn’t blame you if you didn’t – especially since they’re better known for other mediums in the English-speaking world. They’ve graced the comic book page since 1958 in French language publications. However, most of The Smurfs comics have not received an English translation until the 2010s and 2020s.

There are heaps of The Smurfs comics to read, perfect for fans young and old. But how do you get started? This guide will point you in the right direction and includes all the details you need to have a smurfin’ good time. Keep reading to find out what The Smurfs comics are available to read, the different formats that have been published, where to find them, and heaps more.

Who created The Smurfs and where did they first appear?

Belgian cartoonist Pierre Culliford, better known professionally as “Peyo“, created The Smurfs in 1958. Before creating the little blue gnomes, Peyo had a fantasy-adventure strip called Johan and Peewit. First appearing in 1947 in newspapers, it eventually made its way to Spirou magazine in 1952. A 1958 adventure titled “The Smurfs and the Magic Flute” would see them introduce The Smurfs to the world.

The Smurfs would make a few more appearances in Johan and Peewit before graduating to their own series. These began as mini-comics before becoming a feature in the magazine. From there, Peyo would be the creative driver for The Smurfs, with the occasional collaborator such as Yvan Delporte and Gos.

After Peyo’s death from a heart attack on Christmas Eve in 1992, members of Peyo’s studio, alongside his son Thierry Culliford and Nine Culliford – Peyo’s wife – continued creating The Smurfs comics.

Who publishes The Smurfs?

The Smurfs comics were first published in French and handled by two Belgian publishers throughout their publication history. Dupuis was the first to publish The Smurfs comics, serialising it in Spirou magazine and then later in hardcover graphic albums. Since 1990, Le Lombard has published The Smurfs material.

Papercutz is the primary publisher of The Smurfs in English. They’re the ones who commission the English translation of the French material and make it available. In this guide, unless mentioned, all of the English-language Smurfs comics are published by Papercutz.

However, they’re not the only ones to publish The Smurfs in the English-speaking market. Marvel Comics had a 3-part series in 1983, capitalising on the Hanna-Barbera animated series that ran from 1981 to 1989. Additionally, Amulet Books has published We Are The Smurfs, a graphic novel series aimed at early readers.

Where is the best place to start reading The Smurfs?

You can start anywhere with The Smurfs comics. The stories are self-contained, making them accessible to readers young and old. As a result, there’s no essential starting story. I recommend checking out some of the better stories first, picking up whatever you can get your hands on, or whatever one grabs your fancy. Any of these methods should lead to a smurfin’ good time.

You can find out more about the different stories and the formats they’re collected in below.

What The Smurfs graphic novels are available?

As you’ll soon see below, there’s a lot of The Smurfs material. This includes the original run by Peyo and material continued on by his family and other collaborators.

Each section is also broken down by the different formats, which collected stories in different ways. Each of these formats will be explained. However, if you need more advice on the format for you, scroll down towards the bottom to the “Which format is best?” section to help make a decision.
