Absolute Flash writer Lemire has stated that his version of the scarlet speedster, much like his Absolute Universe counterparts Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman, will start from the ground up. Past iterations of Wally West had other titular icons such as Jay Garrick and Barry Allen as tethers and mentors, but in this new universe, the character is the first Flash and will have to figure out the nuances of the Speed Force all on his own.

Jeff Lemire Will Also Bring Another Flash to the DC All-In Party

Lemire, alongside artist Diego Olortegui, is helming another Flash character as part of an ensemble for the DC All-In mainline continuity. The writer's Justice Society of America, featuring Jay Garrick as the Flash, will debut this November. Lemire has expressed his love for the JSA on many occasions and recently discussed what sets the Golden Age team of heroes apart from other legendary superhero teams like the Justice League.

The Justice League Just Uncovered a Whole New World

DC's new Justice League are already staring down an entire universe that they have no idea how to handle, or what to expect from next.

While the Justice League is typically front and center, Lemire believes the Justice Society of America brings something unique, given the team's ties to the past. The JSA operates more like a family, with its heroes living and working together, in contrast to the JLA, which is set up more like a tactical team. The JSA's uniqueness lies in its multi-generational membership that lends the team a deep sense of history unrivaled by any other superhero team. According to the writer, Alan Scott's Green Lantern and Jay Garrick's Flash embody that history.

All in all, Lemire is thrilled to be part of DC again. "What made me fall in love with DC was the scope and history of the universe," he said. "The JSA, being from the 1940s, literally has some of the first superheroes ever created in comics. Seeing them carry on through the decades made that legacy stand out in a way Marvel never fully replicated. When DC was at its best, the JSA and JLA were both running concurrently — and that’s something I'm thrilled to be part of again."

Following the debut of Lemire's JSA #1 on November 6, Absolute Flash #1 will arrive in comic book shops on March 5, 2024.
