Paramount Pictures is moving full speed ahead on Sonic the Hedgehog 4, the latest installment in the blockbuster video game film series. The studio confirmed the sequel’s release date for March 19, 2027, following three previous hits that together earned more than $1 billion worldwide. The announcement follows the start of production, revealed by returning director Jeff Fowler on social media.
Fowler posted a behind-the-scenes photo showing himself on set with a blue screen and a giant number four emblazoned at the center. Holding a clapperboard in one hand and Amy Rose’s signature Piko Piko Hammer in the other, the filmmaker used the image to signal the character’s live-action debut. Kristen Bell, known for her work in Frozen and The Good Place, was recently confirmed to play Amy, a beloved figure from the longtime Sega franchise.

The latest surprise came with word that Oscar winner Sir Ben Kingsley has joined the cast in what insiders describe as a major new role. Reporter Jeff Sneider of TheInSneider said Kingsley’s character remains under wraps, though his performance is expected to carry substantial weight in the story. Kingsley most recently appeared in Marvel’s Wonder Man series as Trevor Slattery. His film slate also includes roles in Young Washington and Terrence Malick’s upcoming biblical drama The Way of the Wind.
The Sonic series has grown into one of Paramount’s most valuable family-action franchises, combining humor with high-end visual effects. The fourth film appears set to draw from Sonic the Hedgehog CD, pointing to a storyline centered on Sonic teaming up with Amy to battle a wave of robotic enemies known as Metal Sonics. While the previous post-credits scene teased Jim Carrey’s Eggman ruling a ruined future, there has been no confirmation that Carrey is returning. If not, Kingsley’s casting could signal a new version of that villainous role or an entirely different antagonist.
Fowler’s announcement indicates production is on schedule for a typical yearlong shoot and post-production cycle. Paramount’s steady pace suggests confidence in its creative team and in the enduring appeal of Sonic’s world. With star power growing and new characters entering the picture, Sonic the Hedgehog 4 is shaping up to be one of the studio’s biggest releases of 2027, adding more momentum to a franchise that continues to dominate the family box office.
