Josh Gad and Dark Horse Comics are turning The Writer into a real-life Willy Wonka experience.
As explained by Gad in a video posted to the official Dark Horse YouTube channel, fifteen copies of the recently released The Writer trade paperback will contain Golden Tickets for readers to find. These Golden Tickets have been hidden in random copies distributed across North America and can only be found in physical comic book stores rather than being available in copies sent to online retailers. Each Golden Ticket entitles the fan who discovers it to a limited-edition, hand-printed t-shirt designed by acclaimed artist Zach Merrill of Action Tees.
A press release from Dark Horse Comics described the shirts as being "based on the stunning cover illustrations by comics legends Mike Mignola (Hellboy) and Jeremy Haun (Berserker), reimagined through Merrill's distinctive lens." The statement also notes that "each shirt will also be packaged in a custom box featuring original packaging design by Merrill, making it a true piece of The Writer lore." Readers should note that while there are fifteen Golden Tickets in total, they have only been distributed across a total of ten comic book stores in North America.
Written by Gad alongside Ben and Max Merkowitz (better known as the Berkowitz Brothers) and featuring art by Ariel Olivetti and letters by Frank Cvetkovic, The Writer follows comic book writer Stan Siegel, whose otherwise ordinary life quickly becomes a supernaturally charged waking nightmare born of long-held family secrets and classic Jewish folklore. Gad himself has described The Writer as "a wild, weird, hilarious, horrifying, folklore-fueled adventure... Like a Jewish Indiana Jones." Throughout the series, Stan and his family and allies uncover enchanted forests, infernal foes, and even come face-to-face with the Biblical King Solomon himself.
