June 16 is shaping up to be a very important day for Marvel fans. The publisher is celebrating '616 Day' with special announcements inspired by Marvel's main 616 universe.
Over the years, fans have begun celebrating June 16 as 616 Day, sharing their appreciation for the Marvel Universe, and now Marvel Comics is joining in on the fun. It was recently announced that select retailers have received a surprise 616 Day package this week, containing exclusive items like 616 Day Variant covers from superstar Marvel artists like Marco Checchetto, Greg Land, Sara Pichelli and Leinil Francis Yu. Also included is a special 616 Day Fantastic Four pin set, showcasing classic comic designs for Mister Fantastic, Invisible Woman, The Human Torch and The Thing.

Marvel Teases an Exciting Announcement For 616 Day
The special packages for comic book shops were only the beginning of Marvel Comics' planned celebrations for 616 Day. The press release for the event teases an exciting announcement, aptly coming at 6:16 PM EST on Marvel's official website. A cryptic image says "He is Back," hinting that Marvel's got something even bigger in store for fans later this evening, although it remains to be seen just who the teaser is referencing.
Marvel's decision to share the special 616 Day variant cover art and the special Fantastic Four pin sets with retailers is part of the publisher's plans to help build up the comic book community. Retailers also received a letter from Marvel Comics President Dan Buckley, who expressed hope of building up 616 Day as an "exciting yearly opportunity for comic shops to rally fans, encourage interest in comics, and drive foot traffic in a way that feels special."

Other celebrations for Marvel's 616 Day recently included a special story in Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man #1, which revealed the origins of why Marvel's main continuity is called 616 and the implications it has for the multiverse at large. Giant-Size Amazing Spider-Man is available now from Marvel Comics.
