Legendary Spider-Man Creator Returning After Nearly 20-Year Absence

One of the most acclaimed writers in Amazing Spider-Man history was J. Michael Straczynski, the popular film and TV writer (best known for his beloved TV series, Babylon 5), who wrote the series from 2001 through the end of "One More Day" in 2007. Now, almost twenty years after he left the wallcrawler, Straczynski is returning to Spider-Man for a new miniseries.

Following his initial return to Spidey in July's Spider-Man and the Sinister Sixteen one-shot in July (which is part of Straczynski's series of offbeat one-shots featuring unlikely pairings within the Marvel Universe), Straczynski will return to the pages of Amazing Spider-Man for the five-issue miniseries, Amazing Spider-Man: Torn, launching in October with art by Pere Pérez, along with a first issue cover by superstar artist Adam Hughes. The series will be set in the past in a very specific point in Spider-Man history.

Growing up in the 1960s, Jeph Loeb was a bigtime fan of the original Amazing Spider-Man issues, and so it is no surprise that he has chosen to set this miniseries back in the early days of the classic Stan Lee/John Romita era on Amazing Spider-Man, when Peter Parker had just started attending college, and was dating Gwen Stacy, and rooming with Harry Osborn, while Mary Jane and Flash Thompson were also hanging around.

However, while this series will be set in the past, Straczynski will also be introducing some new threats to Spider-Man, and will introduce what Marvel describes as a "side of the Marvel Universe that will reverberate into the present from the past!"

What do Pere Pérez and Spider-Man editor Nick Lowe have to say about the project?

In Marvel's press release announcing the new series, editor Nick Lowe explained, "JMS wrote some of my favorite Amazing Spider-Man issues of all time (MORLUN FIGHT! DR. STRANGE CO-STAR STUFF!) so when he said he was interested in coming back to Spidey, I had already jumped at the chance and landed bad and twisted my ankle but I’m okay now. Add Pere Pérez, one of the most inventive artists working in comics, Guru eFX on colors and stories of one of the best eras of Spidey’s history?!?!?! HOW LUCKY ARE WE?!?!”

Pérez added, "I am beyond excited to be working on this book. Being a long time Spidey and JMS fan, this gig is a dream come true. I expected to have fun drawing the Spider-Man action scenes, but Joe is writing such great dialogue scenes for Peter and the supporting cast that I’m enjoying those even more. To sum up, this book is fun, exciting, moving, and we even have a new villain!”

Amazing Spider-Man: Torn #1 is set to be released on October 8th.
