Macaulay Culkin Has a ‘Home Alone’ Sequel in Mind

The 1990 movie Home Alone made Macaulay Culkin one of the biggest child stars of his time. He returned for the 1992 sequel Home Alone 2: Lost in New York, but has not appeared in any official continuation of the series since. At a recent event, the actor said he would be open to playing Kevin McCallister again, describing a new idea for what a sequel could look like. His version would focus less on burglars and more on family relationships, using “metaphorical traps” between a father and his son.

During his appearance at the event “A Nostalgic Night with Macaulay Culkin,” reported by PEOPLE, the actor said, “I wouldn’t be completely allergic to it … It would have to be just right.”

Although Culkin has stepped back from Hollywood in recent years, he has revisited his famous role in two commercials. In 2018, he appeared in an ad for Google Assistant, and earlier this month he starred in a spot for the company Home Instead. He used the second appearance as a chance to talk about his sequel pitch.

“I kind of had this idea … I’m either a widower or a divorcee. I’m raising a kid and all that stuff. I’m working really hard and I’m not really paying enough attention and the kid is kind of getting miffed at me and then I get locked out,” he explained. Culkin added that the story would flip the original concept: “It would be Kevin’s son setting the traps and it would be a ‘get let back into his heart’ kind of deal. That’s the closest elevator pitch that I have.”

For now, there are no official plans for another Home Alone movie. The series has already gone through multiple changes since Culkin’s departure. In 1997, Home Alone 3 introduced all-new characters and told the story of a group of thieves hunting for a stolen computer chip hidden in a toy car. Later sequels—Home Alone 4 in 2002 and Home Alone: The Holiday Heist in 2012—were made for television and featured new casts and updated plots involving kidnapping and art theft.

Disney attempted to revive the concept in 2021 with the Disney+ film Home Sweet Home Alone. The movie followed two struggling parents who believed a boy had stolen a valuable doll. The story took place in the same world as the original, featuring Devin Ratray reprising his role as Buzz McCallister and referencing Kevin. However, the reboot received poor reception, earning about 15 percent positive reviews on Rotten Tomatoes.

Disney has not announced any new Home Alone projects. Still, the company has recently revived other older franchises for Disney+, such as The Santa Clause. Its continuation series, The Santa Clauses, launched in 2022 with two seasons. Since that revival followed a 16-year gap after the last film, The Santa Clause 3: The Escape Clause, fans of Home Alone may not need to give up hope for a new version in the future.
