There’s nothing quite like the love a big brother has for his little sister. I can speak from experience. So, I totally understand what Miles Morales is going through in this book. Billie opened a portal into the Ultimate Universe, and some are saying she could be the key that unlocks the Maker from his chronal quarantine. The stakes are pretty big in this series, and Bille’s not even a year old. This little girl has so much potential, already! But for now, the focus is on Miles teaming up with Giant-Man and the Wasp to travel to Wakanda, confront Black Panther and his crew, and try to get Spider-Man’s little sister back. And this can be a lot more difficult than it sounds… especially when you throw in the Silver Samurai in the end. The mayhem is surely going to continue, and everything just feels like a massive countdown to when Maker finally gets out. In the meantime, we’ll have fun seeing what kind of trouble Billie Morales gets herself into, and what kind of stress she will cause her big brother to experience.

MILES AND THE ULTIMATES VS. BLACK PANTHER! MILES MORALES teams up with fan-favorite ULTIMATES team members GIANT-MAN and THE WASP! But BLACK PANTHER doesn’t want these Ultimate terrorist interlopers in Wakanda… Plus: The secret history of Janet Van Dyne!

PROS:
- What really struck me first was the POV that we get from Giant-Man. We immediately see all his demons, his insecurities, but more importantly, the intense love that he has for the Wasp. Giant-Man has always been one of the darker, more complex characters in Marvel, so it’s rewarding to see him fleshed out even more in this latest volume.
- As hinted earlier, I could also relate to Miles, and you just feel for the guy throughout the entire issue. It is clear that he only has one thing on his mind, and that is to find his sister and bring her home to safety. It will be interesting to see to what lengths Spider-Man is able to go for his cute baby sibling.
- I appreciate how the story may seem very small in the beginning, but we are already getting hints that all this is leading up to something big and major for the Ultimate Universe. I have been a fan of the Ultimates since Day 1, all the way back when I was still in college, so to see another big epic coming our way is a delight that I never expected to relive. And the gritty, hardcore, in-your-face kind of magic that the Ultimates always brought to the game is still here for everybody to enjoy.
- The art may seem a little rough at first, but it actually fits the Ultimate Universe quite well. Everything feels dynamic, lively, vibrant, colorful, and for some reason, dark and ominous. Even with the poignant humor across the panels, the art-style depicts the Ultimate Universe as a gloomier, scarier, and grimmer place to live in. Even Miles points this out as he tells Giant-Man and Wasp about so many luxuries his Earth has compared to theirs. It’s tough being an Ultimate!

CONS:
- There actually isn’t so much action in this one. Sure, there is a confrontation between Spider-Man and the Ultimates with the forces of Wakanda. But nothing too juicy happens, and all interaction is kept pretty friendly… until, of course, Billie is taken away and Spider-Man immediately breaks down.

FINAL GRADE: A

The last panel showing that Silver Samurai and the X-Men are going to get involved makes me want to read the next chapter as soon as possible. I am loving this series so far, mainly because it features Miles Morales back in the Ultimate Universe, but also because we see the real people behind the masks. In this case, we get a great character-study of Giant-Man and the Wasp. We also get a closer glimpse into the inner workings of Wakanda. We meet all the cast and crew, plus we see how their technology works in this world. We even get to see Black Panther in all his royal glory, fearlessly leading while also being undeniably hands-on. You can’t really ask for more.
