Three issues into Incursion and I’m officially all-in. While it’s easy to be skeptical when major crossovers promise “everything changes,” what this book is doing with Miles Morales, the Ultimate Universe, and the X-Men is something deeper—and sneakily heartfelt. Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #3 delivers high-stakes action, smart character moments, and most surprisingly, a quiet emotional thread that ties it all together.
This issue is a great reminder that even in the middle of mutant mayhem and multiversal mystery, it’s still possible to have a good time—and that nobody writes charming, heartfelt banter quite like Deniz Camp and Cody Ziglar.

MILES’ FIRST CONFRONTATION WITH THE MAKER’S COUNCIL! Silver Samurai attacks interloper Miles Morales! Fortunately, a band of mutants calling themselves the X-Men come to his aid! What will Miles make of the dark history of this alternate universe now that he is faced with the reality of what the Maker has done?

PROS:
- Let’s get right into it. X-Men + Spider-Man = Instant Chemistry. The real joy in this issue is seeing Miles Morales connect with the X-Men—and realizing that, in many ways, they’re more alike than different. They’re all outsiders. They’ve all been hunted, misunderstood, and forced to make tough decisions at way too young an age. But instead of wallowing in that, the book lets them bond. They learn from each other. There’s a beautiful undercurrent of hope in this issue: the idea that even when you’re branded as different or dangerous, you’re never truly alone.
- This is where the book sings. It’s not just about team-ups—it’s about understanding. About shared pain and shared purpose. And Miles fits in with them effortlessly, not because he tries to, but because of who he is. That core of empathy, that drive to help—it makes him feel like an honorary X-Man already.
- Baby Energy Wins Again. Let’s talk about Miles’ sister, Billie, because once again, she steals the show. Her presence in this series continues to be the emotional grounding point—and also, just straight-up adorable. Watching her win over even the Silver Samurai with her tiny smile and fearless energy? That’s pure comic book joy. She softens everyone in the room, even when the stakes are brutal.
- And shoutout to the writers for absolutely nailing the sibling relationship. You can feel the love Miles has for his sister in every glance and word balloon. It’s not forced or overly sentimental—it just is. It adds real stakes to everything. Miles isn’t just fighting to save a universe—he’s fighting to protect her.
- The Sword Skills Are Sharp. A standout visual and character moment here? Watching Miles hold his own in a sword fight. It’s just another reminder of how adaptable he is—not just in his powers, but in mindset. Seeing him deflect attacks and move with precision, especially in a fight against mutant-trained warriors, was super satisfying. It’s a new layer for the character that feels earned and fresh, not gimmicky.
- And can we talk about how good the art is here? Marvel is killing it. Every page is bursting with energy, especially the fight scenes—even if, yes, they’re a bit too fast (more on that below). But what’s really hitting me is the classic comic book flavor this art brings. It feels modern, but with that old-school dynamic edge—the kind that reminds me why I fell in love with superhero comics in the first place.
- Team Spotlight: Mutants Steal the Show. Even though it’s a Spider-Man title, this issue really belongs to the X-Men—and I mean that in a good way. Every mutant gets a little time to shine, and none of it feels wasted. Their dialogue is sharp, their powers are displayed creatively, and their personalities bounce off Miles in fun, sometimes surprising ways.
- I especially loved the growing sense of camaraderie between Maystorm and Miles, which makes next issue’s showdown with Magik even more exciting. You can already tell it’s going to be equal parts emotional and explosive.

CONS:
- A Minor Quibble: More Action, Please. If there’s one thing holding this issue back from perfection, it’s the pacing of the action. The fight against Silver Samurai and his team had so much potential, but it flies by too quickly. I would’ve loved at least a few more pages of extended team-up combat—especially now that we’re seeing Spider-Man and the X-Men fighting together. That said, the panels we do get are gorgeous and kinetic.

FINAL GRADE: A

Banter, Blocks, and Big Things to Come. One thing this book has consistently nailed? Tone. Even with the multiverse hanging in the balance, the dialogue remains funny, snappy, and just the right amount of dramatic. There’s tension, but also levity. Moments of big emotion are broken up with classic Spider-Man quips, and the X-Men even get in on the banter. That balance is hard to pull off, but Marvel makes it look easy.
I also appreciate how clearly this series is laying the foundation for something major in the Ultimate Universe. The seeds being planted—the mysterious personalities, the alternate timelines, the growing alliances—are all hinting at an endgame that’s going to be massive. And I, for one, can’t wait to see where it leads.
Ultimate Spider-Man: Incursion #3 is another strong chapter in a series that’s somehow managing to be fun, funny, emotional, and epic all at once. Between the dynamic art, the heartfelt writing, and the ever-growing sense of mystery, this book is shaping up to be one of the best things coming out of Marvel’s Ultimate line.
Even if you’re new to comics—or just jumping in now—you’ll be able to follow along with no problem. It’s new-reader friendly, full of energy, and a great reminder that being different doesn’t mean being alone.
And if next issue really is Miles and Maystorm vs. Magik? You can bet I’ll be there for it.
